Joan Branson, Wife of Billionaire Richard Branson, Dies at 80
A remarkable partnership spanning five decades has come to an end with the passing of Joan Branson, wife of British entrepreneur Richard Branson. She was 80 years old. The news was shared by Branson himself on Tuesday, marking a profound loss for the family and those who knew her.
A 50-Year Partnership
Richard Branson announced his wife’s death on both Instagram and LinkedIn, offering a deeply personal tribute. “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away,” he wrote. He described her as “the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for,” adding that she was “my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.” No further details regarding the circumstances of her death were immediately released.
From Antique Shop to Global Empire
The couple’s story began in 1976 at The Manor, a recording studio located in Oxfordshire, England. Branson recounted in a 2020 blog post how he was immediately struck by Joan’s grounded nature. “Joan was a down-to-earth Scottish lady and I quickly realised she wouldn’t be impressed by my usual antics,” he shared.
At the time, Joan operated an antique shop specializing in vintage signs and advertisements. Branson described his initial hesitation before entering the shop, ultimately leading to a collection of unique pieces. “Over the next few weeks, my visits to Joan amassed me an impressive collection of old hand painted tin signs, which advertised anything from Hovis bread to Woodbine cigarettes,” he wrote, highlighting the charming beginnings of their relationship.
A Family Legacy and Loss
Together, Joan and Richard Branson raised three children: Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah. The family experienced profound sorrow with the untimely death of their daughter, Clare Sarah, shortly after her birth in 1979.
Richard Branson is globally recognized as the founder of the Virgin Group, encompassing ventures such as Virgin Atlantic airline, the space tourism company Virgin Galactic, and satellite launcher Virgin Orbit. While Joan Branson largely remained out of the public spotlight, her influence as a stabilizing force in Branson’s life was evident in his reflections. Her passing represents a significant loss, not only to her family but also to those who admired the enduring strength of their partnership.
