Passenger transport companies would need some 6,000 bus drivers to meet the demand for activity that the sector currently has, according to estimates made by Confebus the Spanish Confederation of Bus Transport (Confebus) the National Association of Bus Transport Entrepreneurs (Anetra).

It is a sector closely linked to tourism and leisure, which imposes a priori unattractive working conditions. Hence, the lack of vocations is widespread and also occurs in Europe. In Spain it now emerges with greater intensity as this lack of generational change coincides with the retirement of those who obtained their driving license while serving in the military and graduated with the direct possibility of practicing a trade. Today the average age of active professionals is 49 years, but 20% of them are 55 or over. Only 3% are under 25 years of age.

Another obstacle to entry into the sector is the necessary requirements to start working in it. To the possession of the D circulation permit (which before could only be obtained from the age of 24, age already reduced to 21) must be added the obtaining of the Certificate of Professional Aptitude (CAP). This requires face-to-face training of about 140 hours. The total investment can be close to 4,000 euros between the two things. This training is approved by the European Union, so the sector sees its hiring capacity limited to EU or non-EU citizens who are trained here.

According to data from Anetra, the salary range for these professionals ranges between 1,500 and 3,000 euros per month, depending on the city in Spain in which they work or the type of route (urban, tourist, interurban, short-distance or long-distance). among others). Confebus raises these figures by placing the national average for a driver with ten years of experience at 20,000 euros gross per year (1,660 per month). This salary, obtained after purchasing the 2019 provincial agreements, in Álava rises to 23,000 (1,900 euros per month) and in Bizkaia up to 28,000 (2,300 euros per month.
