Kochi: Actor Kalabhavan Sobi George has been sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000 in the case of extorting two and a half lakh rupees from a native of Ernakulam Edakochi by offering him a job in America. The Kochi Magistrate Court has given the sentence. Sobi’s accomplice, Peter Wilson, a native of Edakochi, has also been sentenced to the same sentence. Both are the first and third accused in the case. The court has issued an arrest warrant against the second accused Sobi’s mother, Chinnamma George. The action is for failure to appear in court.

The court has stayed the sentence on the application of both. It is customary for the court to grant a stay on appeal for prison sentences of up to five years. Kalabhavan Sobi told Manorama Online that he will appeal the verdict in the High Court. In 2014, the Palluruthi police registered a case on the complaint that two and a half lakh rupees had been stolen from a native of Edakochi.

A homemaker from Wayanad’s Pulpally and her son had been offered jobs in Switzerland and filed a complaint with the police showing that Sobi had cheated her of money. The complaint was that after the son got a job, he asked for the money back but did not receive it. They sent Rs 2,20,000 to the account. Sobi says that even though the case went to court, the court was informed that the money could be paid and the complainants did not come to collect the money.
