Rugby Star joe Marler Reflects on “Heartbreaking” Betrayal in Celebrity Traitors Finale
The BBC reality competition series Celebrity traitors concluded with a shocking twist, leaving rugby legend Joe Marler feeling “heartbroken” after a last-minute betrayal by a close ally. Despite entering the final roundtable with a strategic plan to expose the remaining traitors,Marler was ultimately eliminated,with the £87,500 prize pot going to comedian Alan Carr for his chosen charity.
Marler,35,quickly became a fan favorite throughout the season,captivating audiences with his blend of cunning gameplay and ruthless decision-making. Though,his journey ended in disappointment when fellow contestant Nick Mohammed deviated from their agreed-upon strategy,sealing Marler’s fate.
Mohammed, who has since apologized to Marler, ultimately did not win the competition himself. carr’s victory marked a dramatic end to the series, which has captivated viewers with it’s intricate social dynamics and suspenseful gameplay.
Speaking on saturday Kitchen, Marler openly discussed the emotional impact of Mohammed’s decision.”He [Nick] didn’t stick to my plan, he whent with his gut, which was a shame,” Marler explained. Despite the initial sting of betrayal, he confessed to still feeling affection for Mohammed, playfully referencing his endearing qualities: “But I still was so in love with him, as that little dicky bow, his little face, the three little love hearts he put by my name… Even though in that moment, I was heartbroken, I was like ‘Aww’.”
Looking back on the outcome, Marler praised Carr’s win, calling him “What a winner.” Beyond the competition itself, Marler emphasized how much he enjoyed his time on the show, embracing both the challenges and the opportunities for self-reflection.
A notably poignant moment of self-revelation occurred during a conversation with comedian Lucy Beaumont, who admitted she wasn’t familiar with his rugby career. “She was like, ‘What is it you do than?’ and I went, ‘Oh I play rugby,’ and she went, ‘Like rugby union or league or something like that?’ and it was quite a big moment for me because you’re in the rugby bubble and you think there’s nothing bigger,” Marler recalled. “You’re in it and it’s amazing, everyone knows rugby, but you get out of it and go in the real world, and they’re like, ‘Who are you?’ and you go, ‘Good point’, and it made me go, well who am I actually?”
Marler also expressed his fondness for fellow contestant Joe Wilkinson, describing him as “one of the funniest blokes I’ve come across, and I just fell in love with him, also really clever.”
the experience wasn’t without its humorous missteps, though. Marler admitted to mistakenly banishing actor Mark Bonnar solely based on a villainous role Bonnar had previously played in the television series Line of Duty. “It’s only because I’d watched an episode of Line of Duty and he plays the baddie in it,” Marler confessed, adding, “and I got it fully wrong, I felt so bad!” He noted that Bonnar’s demeanor even mirrored his character from the show, further solidifying his incorrect suspicion.
Despite the heartbreak of the final betrayal, Joe Marler’s time on Celebrity traitors proved to be a valuable experience, offering both entertainment and a unique opportunity for personal introspection. He remains gracious towards mohammed, maintaining “nothing but love” for his former ally, and acknowledging the overall positive impact of the show.
