The University of Florida officially introduced Sumrall as its new head coach on December 1. Just four days later, he was on the sidelines leading Tulane to a decisive 34-21 victory over North Texas in the American Athletic Conference championship game, securing the Green Wave a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff.
“Maybe I’m a football maniac,but I’m actually thriving right now,” Sumrall stated prior to the championship matchup. “I’m freaking loving what I’m doing right now. I’m excited that I get to finish this as I get ready to start what’s next.”
The changing dynamics of college athletics, particularly with the advent of the transfer portal and increased financial resources, have streamlined the process for coaches to manage their departures from one program while simultaneously preparing for their arrival at another. Previously, Sumrall would have been heavily involved in bolstering the Gators’ recruiting class and identifying potential transfer targets. Now, those tasks largely fall under Caldwell’s purview. This restructuring allows Sumrall to dedicate his full attention to preparing Tulane for its upcoming first-round College Football Playoff game against Ole Miss on December 20.
