Jos Buttler: Future Uncertain After T20 World Cup Exit & Reflects on Form

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

Jos Buttler, the explosive England batter, remains committed to representing his country despite a disappointing showing at the recent T20 World Cup. While acknowledging his performance in the tournament wasn’t up to par, Buttler, 35, has dismissed talk of retirement and is looking ahead to a potential ODI and T20I series against India later this year. The future of his international career, however, isn’t guaranteed, as he admits he’s no longer in a position to influence selection decisions.

The England team’s semi-final defeat to India in the T20 World Cup marked a low point for Buttler personally and for the team as a whole. He openly acknowledged his struggles during the tournament, stating on his podcast, For the Love of Cricket, “Obviously I had a poor tournament, which is disappointing.” Despite this, he emphasized his desire to continue playing for England, adding, “I’ve been playing some of the best cricket of my [career] in recent years, so hopefully I can get back to playing my best.” The question of his continued involvement, however, remains open. “I certainly have ambitions [to continue playing for England] but no longer being a captain, I’m not a selector and whatever, so what will be will be. Yeah, we will see.”

Seeking Solitude and Reflection

Following the World Cup, Buttler sought respite from the game, taking a week-long break with his family in the mountains of France. He described the experience as crucial for mental recovery, stating, “I couldn’t have been further away from cricket, which for me at the time was just perfect. It’s exactly what I needed.” This period of detachment allowed him to step back and process the events of the tournament, and start to refocus on his game. He’s now preparing to return to India, but this time to compete in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Gujarat Titans.

The require for space was born from a sense of frustration with his performance. “It was really refreshing – I really enjoyed it, a complete sort of release,” Buttler explained. “Slowly but surely, I’d say at the start of this week, [I am] just starting to reflect a bit and have a few thoughts about what’s key to me and my cricket, and why it probably didn’t go quite as I would’ve liked.” He admitted to struggling to pinpoint the exact reasons for his struggles, acknowledging that even with dedicated effort, results aren’t always guaranteed. “There’s elements [to what went wrong] that I actually don’t really know exactly. For all your best intentions and hard work and efforts to perform, it just didn’t work, and sometimes that’s okay as well. That’s something I’ve had to realise. It wasn’t for a lack of effort. It just didn’t quite happen.”

A New Chapter with Gujarat Titans

Buttler’s return to India will be with the Gujarat Titans, a team he joined in 2025, adding another chapter to his extensive T20 league experience. According to his player profile on ESPNcricinfo, Buttler has too played for the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Paarl Royals, among others. His career statistics demonstrate a consistent performer across formats, with over 5,888 runs in 122 First-Class matches, and a strong record in both ODI and T20I cricket.

The IPL season will provide Buttler with a platform to regain his form and confidence ahead of England’s potential series against India. He last played an ODI for England on January 27, 2026, against Sri Lanka, and his most recent T20I appearance was on March 5, 2026, against India. His contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) still has 18 months remaining, offering a window for his return to the international stage.

Defending the England Setup

Amidst scrutiny following the World Cup, Buttler was quick to defend the England team’s management, specifically praising the environment created by Harry Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum. He also acknowledged the strength of the Indian team, describing them as “a serious team” and “worthy winners” after their dominant performances in the knockout stages. He recently spoke out in support of the team’s approach, highlighting the positive atmosphere fostered within the squad.

Buttler’s willingness to address the criticism head-on and his continued ambition to play for England suggest he’s not ready to grant up on his international career just yet. His focus now shifts to the IPL, where he’ll aim to rediscover his form and prove he still has a valuable role to play in the England setup. The upcoming series against India, scheduled for July, will be a key indicator of whether he can reclaim his place in the team.

The next step for Buttler will be his performance in the IPL season, beginning in late March. England fans will be watching closely, hoping to see the dynamic batter return to his best form. The selection for the India series will follow, providing a definitive answer to the question of his international future.
