Conceived in 2023 to convert Plateau State’s tourism assets into economic value, the Jos Family Christmas Festival is establishing December as the state’s official Tourism Month, combining family entertainment, faith gatherings, and private-sector events to attract visitors and boost local commerce.
For decades, Plateau State has worn the title, Home of Peace and Tourism
with pride, drawing on its cool weather, rock formations, waterfalls, and cultural diversity. Pwajok Chuwang Nyam, General Manager of the Plateau State Tourism Corporation, noted that authorities recognized a need to transition those natural gifts into measurable economic output.
The major reasoning behind having a Jos Family Christmas Festival was that, having recognised the fact that Plateau State is endowed naturally as a tourism destination, the question became how to move these natural endowments from potentials to real economic wealth and value for Plateau,

Establishing December as Official Tourism Month
First introduced in December 2023 under Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the celebration was designed as a destination event for domestic travelers. The state’s tourism policy now institutionalizes December as an official Tourism Month, anchored by marquee gatherings.

Fencing Wildlife Park to Counter Neglect
Officials have erected more than 17 kilometers of perimeter fencing at the Jos Wildlife Park and begun extensive renovations of existing structures, pairing seasonal events with infrastructure investments to address long-standing neglect and urban encroachment at key conservation sites.

The state government has taken steps to institutionalize December as Plateau State’s official Tourism Month following the growing significance of the Christmas Festival under Governor Mutfwang’s administration.
