Jose Alvarado Embraces Homecoming with the New York Knicks
A New York native’s dream came to fruition as guard Jose Alvarado made his highly anticipated debut with the New York Knicks, a moment he described as a profound connection to his roots and a “blessing.”
The journey back home has been years in the making for Alvarado, who grew up playing basketball in Brooklyn and honed his skills at Christ the King High School in Queens. When he checked into the game late in the first quarter at Madison Square Garden, the roar of the crowd resonated deeply.
“It’s different,” Alvarado stated. “Playing for the Knicks is a huge thing, but I’m literally a kid from the same streets the fans are, and to be part of everything here, it’s a blessing. It’s something I had to get used to and to get it out of the way, let’s get the ball rolling.”
Despite the electric atmosphere and personal significance, Alvarado’s debut didn’t unfold as planned on the court. The Knicks suffered a 137-134 overtime loss to the Indiana Pacers – their worst defeat of the season – on February 10, 2026. Alvarado finished with four points and five assists in 18 minutes and 13 seconds of play.
“It’s not the outcome we wanted, but I’ll tell you this, it was a blessing to be out there,” Alvarado said, maintaining a positive outlook. “I can’t wait to continue growing and getting better.”
The point guard admitted to feeling nervous, acknowledging the weight of the moment and the support of a large contingent of friends and family in attendance. “A lot” of people were there to cheer him on, he noted. He expressed eagerness to build on the experience and contribute to future victories.
While the game itself presented challenges, Alvarado did showcase flashes of his potential, saving Jalen Brunson from a turnover and assisting on a crucial three-pointer. He even demonstrated his signature hustle by diving into the stands to secure possession. However, those positive moments were overshadowed by team-wide struggles.
Looking ahead, those who know Alvarado best are confident in his ability to thrive in his new environment. Joe Arbitello, Alvarado’s former coach at Christ the King, believes the transition to the Knicks represents a significant step forward. “For it to happen as a Knick brings it to another level,” Arbitello said.
Arbitello, who was present at the game, anticipates Alvarado will flourish in the passionate New York atmosphere, even if his debut didn’t fully reflect his capabilities. “I think he’ll be great here, just like he always is,” Arbitello affirmed.
Interestingly, Arbitello doesn’t foresee the Garden’s spotlight altering Alvarado’s fundamental approach to the game. “He’s going to be the same player he’s always been,” Arbitello explained. “He’s going to play with the same toughness we saw from him every day in every game and every practice.”
Arbitello emphasized that Alvarado’s consistency is a defining characteristic. “It doesn’t matter where he is,” he said. “He could be at the Garden or at a rec game. He’s going to be the same guy and play as hard as he possibly can.”
This unwavering dedication, Arbitello believes, will resonate with New York fans. “If he plays like he did in New Orleans or anywhere else he’s been before now and he does it here, I think he’s gonna be a fan favorite,” Arbitello predicted. “He brings what New York fans love: toughness, hard-nosed, winning basketball. We’ve seen it for years and for it to come here, it’s gonna be electric.”
