Urgent Mountain Rescue: Four Hospitalized with Suspected Hypothermia in Jotunheimen

A large-scale rescue operation unfolded in the Jotunheimen mountains of Norway on Thursday evening, resulting in the evacuation of four individuals to Førde hospital with suspected hypothermia. The incident began with a satellite-based emergency message reporting a group of 15 experiencing cold-related illness, including several who were initially unconscious.

A swift response was initiated, mobilizing significant resources to the remote Rauddalen valley, situated on the border between Vestland and Lom municipality in Innlandet county. The mountains in this region exceed 2,100 meters in elevation, creating conditions conducive to rapid hypothermia.

Emergency Response and Initial Assessment

According to a statement from operations manager Haagen Løvseth of the Innlandet police district, local rescue teams were immediately dispatched, supported by a total of five helicopters from health services, the police, and the rescue service. The initial emergency message, received at 9:13 PM local time, prompted the extensive mobilization.

By 10:24 PM, air ambulance and rescue helicopters had arrived on the scene. A rapid assessment determined that four members of the tour group required immediate medical attention and transport to Førde hospital. While initially reported as unconscious, authorities confirmed that all four patients were conscious at the time of evacuation.

Condition of the Group and Ongoing Support

Fortunately, the remaining 11 members of the group did not require immediate medical intervention or evacuation. Authorities reported that they were stable and receiving support on-site.

“Local rescue resources are continuing to monitor the situation and provide assistance as needed,” a senior official stated.

The incident underscores the inherent risks associated with high-altitude trekking, even during seemingly moderate weather conditions. The rapid onset of hypothermia in a group of this size highlights the importance of preparedness, appropriate clothing, and swift communication in mountainous environments.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
