Crans-Montana, Switzerland is grappling with the aftermath of a devastating New Year’s Day fire that claimed 41 lives. The tragedy, sparked by fireworks, underscores the critical need for stringent safety regulations and proactive enforcement—and is already prompting a wave of legal claims potentially exceeding $660 million.

A Night of Celebration Turns Deadly

The fire erupted during New Year’s celebrations at the Constellation bar, and investigations revealed that sparks from “fountain” candles ignited acoustic foam on the basement ceiling, according to initial findings. “We are aware that money will not erase any hurt, we hope to be able to support the families struck by this tragedy and show the solidarity of the community of Crans-Montana,” stated Nicolas Féraud, the president of the municipal council.

Did you know? Civil claims related to the fire are already estimated to be between 600 million and one billion Swiss francs, according to Swiss media outlet “Le Nouvelliste.”

Safety Checks Lacked, Investigation Widens

A troubling revelation emerged on January 6: Nicolas Féraud admitted that safety and fire inspections of the bar hadn’t been conducted since 2019, despite annual requirements. The French couple who own the establishment are currently under investigation for “negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm and negligent arson.” The investigation has since expanded to include two community security officials, who are scheduled to be questioned in the coming days.

Families Seek Accountability

The municipality of Crans-Montana has pledged to “face the responsibilities determined by justice,” but for the victims’ families, that’s not enough. “This donation ‘goes in the right direction, but we know that the total damage will be out of proportion to this amount,’” remarked Miriam Mazou, an attorney representing a victim’s family. “At the same time, the victims are waiting for justice to be rapid and effective so that all light can be shed on the responsibilities that led to this tragedy,” she added.
