The entrepreneur and hotelier Juan Aceña Puig died this Friday at the age of 91. Owner of establishments such asHotel Don Juan Resort from Lloret de Mar, was one of the great hoteliers of the Costa Brava.
A “pioneer” hotelier
Business-wise, Juan Aceña grew rapidly during the sixties. At the end of the seventies he was the owner of the San Martín hotel chain, one of the most important in Spain, which included a dozen hotels with around 5,000 beds in total. Most of these establishments were located in Lloret de Mar and two of them in Palma de Mallorca.
«It marked a before and an after in terms of large hotel structures. In addition, he was, in the 70s, a pioneer in bringing charters to the Costa Brava. He understood very well the important demand from English tourism”, says Francesc Zucchitello, president of the Association of Hospitality Businessmen of Tossa de Mar.
During his professional career as an entrepreneur, Juan Aceña Puig, was also a protagonist for suspension of payments and bankruptcies in some of their businesses.
In addition, in January of last year, one of its properties, the Don Juan hotel, located in Lloret de Mar and one of the largest establishments in all of Catalonia with 819 rooms, it became managed by the hotel company Fergus Group -owned by the Majorcan businessman Pep Cañellas- which thus began to operate on the Costa Brava.
The change in management of this accommodation coincided with the 50th anniversary of the construction of Hotel Don Juan which, despite changing management, continued to be owned by Don Juan Hotels and operated through the company Hotel Blanco Don Juan, which, with a workforce of around 180 workers, was chaired by businessman Juan Aceña Puig.
In addition, years ago, the businessman had other hotel establishments on the Costa Brava, such as the Don Juan Center hotel in Lloret de Mar or the Don Juan hotel in Tossa de Mar.
