Puebla, Pue. Juan Pablo Kuri Carballo, a former leader of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), was arrested this Friday near the Hermanos Serdán International Airport in Huejotzingo, according to police reports.
Agents from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) executed an arrest warrant shortly after 4 p.m. for alleged family violence. The arrest signals a potential shift in the political landscape of Puebla, as Kuri Carballo has been a visible figure in regional politics for over a decade.
Following his arrest, Kuri Carballo was transferred to a control judge at the San Andrés Cholula House of Justice, where he awaits an initial hearing. Authorities expect to determine his legal status in the coming hours, adhering to established legal procedures.
Kuri Carballo’s political career includes a run for mayor of Puebla in 2013, representing the PVEM. He competed against Enrique Doger Guerrero of the PRI, but ultimately lost to Antonio Gali Fayad of the National Action Party (PAN). The race was closely watched, highlighting the evolving dynamics of Puebla’s political scene.
Despite the loss, Kuri Carballo secured a position as a councilor for the Puebla city council through proportional representation, serving from 2014 to 2017. This role allowed him to influence local policy and build a network within the city government.
In 2014, he was elected as the state leader of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico. Later, in 2019, he was appointed Secretary of Social Communication of the National Executive Committee of the PVEM, further solidifying his position within the party’s national structure.
