Bangladesh won the SAFF U-16 Women’s Football Championship by beating India 3-2 in a tiebreaker in the final. This achievement was made possible by the great skill of goalkeeper Yarjan. He also won the tournament’s best goalkeeper trophy. Yarjan’s success in his village is rejoicing. Sweets were also distributed.

Yarjan Begum’s house is in Khoprabandi village of Harivasa union of Panchagarh Sadar upazila. She is the daughter of Abdur Razzak there.

Today Monday (March 11) morning, people of all ages started pouring into Yarjan’s house. Yarjan spoke with his parents and locals through video calls. Local people are excited about the success of a girl from a poor family. Happy family and neighbors too. Local sports organizer ATM Akhtaruzzaman Dablo distributed sweets among these people.

ATM Akhtaruzzaman Dabulu said, ‘Yarjan is the godsend of our area. His family was once impoverished. Their family runs on the income of his mother Renu Begum. Coming from such a family is not an easy matter. We are proud of Yarzan’s success. We expect that he will make a place in the national team and give something good to Bangladesh football. Best wishes for Yarjan.’

The Yarjans’ home is in a remote village 12 km from the district town. They have two small houses next to the road. One of the houses is completely dilapidated. On one side the canopy tins are open. In the showcase of that room are decorated the crests and trophies of Yarzan’s achievements.

It has been found that Yarjan’s father Abdur Razzak is physically ill. Can’t do any work. As a result, mother Renu Begum is the only earner in the family. Their family runs on Renu Begum’s earnings. Their wealth is only the land.

Renu Begum is overwhelmed by her daughter’s success. He said, ‘My daughter has come this far with great difficulty. I raised my daughter by working on people’s agricultural land. I could not feed my daughter properly for three hours in a family of poverty. His indomitable will has brought him success, making us proud.’

He also said, ‘I get a daily wage of Tk 250. With this, the medical expenses of the sick husband and running the family. Many times I could not pay the fare for my daughter to go to practice. I could never pay extra money to buy something. Today all my troubles are gone, my chest is filled with pride.’

Yarjan’s father, Abdur Razzak, said, ‘She has been interested in football since she was young. But we never encouraged, people didn’t say good things either. Moreover, there was no system to send them to practice. But the girl didn’t care. So, ignoring the tension in the family, I supported him. His mother contributed the most. Tuku Football Academy has also been very supportive. Now my daughter is the best goalkeeper. My chest is filled with pride for my daughter’s success today. I feel very happy to see so many people at home. I want my daughter to do well. May our name shine.’

Yarjan is a student of Harivasa Girls High School. The teacher of this school, Afsar Ali, said, ‘Yarjan is a sincere and hardworking student of the school. The school has already gained quite a reputation in sports. I watched the entire final match against India on TV. His excellent keeping impressed me. We are proud of his continued success.’

Yarjan practiced at Panchagarh Tuku Football Academy. Tuku Rehman, director of the academy, said, ‘I practice the potential players. Yerzan was very hardworking. He has always given the best. I am very proud of Yarjan’s recent success on the field in Nepal. I hope Yarjan will give something good to football.’
