As Saturday Night Live celebrates its monumental 50th anniversary, comedic legend Julia Louis-Dreyfus takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscing about her formative years on the iconic sketch comedy show.
The acclaimed actress recently opened up about the incredibly nerve-wracking first rehearsal she endured after joining the SNL cast in 1982 for season 8. At the tender age of 21, Louis-Dreyfus became the youngest female cast member in the show’s history.
“My journey with SNL began with the Practical Theatre Company in Chicago," she revealed in an interview with People. "The show’s producers were blown away by our performance. They recruited the entire company to join the SNL family in New York."
However, her very first rehearsal was a stark contrast to the initial excitement. She found herself performing the first act alongside three newcomers, under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights in the middle of the workday. The audience consisted of 20 cynical and seemingly disapproving SNL cast members and writers.
Adding to the pressure, Louis-Dreyfus shared that the existing cast harbored resentment toward them, as many of their friends had been dismissed to make room for the new recruits.
“We were set up for failure," she confessed. "Sketches that had been wildly successful in Chicago flopped disastrously. The experience was incredibly humiliating. To be honest, that initial encounter cast a shadow over our SNL experience for the following years."
Despite the rough start, Louis-Dreyfus persevered and etched her name into SNL history. Her memorable characters, like the flamboyant televangelist April May June, the sassy ‘Let’s Watch TV’ co-host Consuela, and the quirky ‘Weekend Update’ teen correspondent Patti Lynn Hunnsucker, became fan favorites.
Sharing the stage with comedy greats like Billy Crystal, Eddie Murphy, Martin Short, Christopher Guest, and her future husband, Brad Hall, Louis-Dreyfus bid farewell to SNL in 1985.
