Sebastien Loeb WRC: Why He’s Stepping Back | Rallying News

Is a return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) on the cards for Sébastien Loeb? Despite remaining open to possibilities, a comeback for the nine-time world champion appears unlikely in the near future.

The French rally legend hasn’t competed in a WRC race since the 2022 season. That year, Loeb piloted an M-Sport Ford Puma in four rallies, culminating in a historic victory at the Monte-Carlo Rally – his 80th win in the World Rally Championship – after a thrilling battle with Sébastien Ogier.

Since then, Loeb has largely focused on rally raid competitions, aiming to finally conquer the Dakar Rally. While he maintains a flexible schedule, a guest appearance in the WRC isn’t currently in his plans.

Why a WRC Return Is Complicated

“First of all, it’s not possible as long as I’m at Dacia. For brand-related reasons, it’s complicated,” Loeb explained in an interview with the French-language edition of Motorsport.com.

“To drive a rally at some point, why not? I don’t know. But at least at the moment it’s not part of the plans for the near future,” he continued. “My plans sometimes arise at very short notice. We could decide in February to drive a rally in April, but that’s not a project at the moment.”

Loeb still cherishes the thrill of rallying, enjoying events like the Rallye du Var and the French championship for their vibrant atmosphere. However, at 51 years old, a full-time return to the WRC is no longer a realistic option.

Ogier’s Title Doesn’t Spark a Challenge

Even Sébastien Ogier securing his ninth world title this year – tying Loeb’s record – hasn’t ignited a desire in Loeb to pursue a tenth championship crown.

“I know for a fact that I would regret it the moment I signed again,” Loeb admitted with a smile. “If the championship only had six rounds, then yes. But competing in 14 rallies and getting back into this environment is honestly too much. All the preparation, the video study in advance and the return to a championship in which I no longer know the tests because I was away for too long would require far too much commitment.”

Loeb emphasized that his decision to step back stemmed from a desire for more personal time and schedule flexibility. He finds the current rally raid program suits him well, allowing him to balance his passion for racing with enjoying life outside of the sport, participating in just five events annually.
