Juneau residents looking to get young children comfortable in the water have a registration date to mark on their calendars. Online registration for a new session of swim lessons offered by Juneau Pools opens this Friday, February 27th, at noon. The classes, designed for the city’s youngest swimmers, will take place in March at both Augustus Brown Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center.
The program caters to two age groups: Parent & Tot, for children aged 0 to 6 months, and Lil’ Swimmers, for those between 6 months and 3 years old. A key requirement for the Parent & Tot classes is that an adult must be in the water with their child during the lesson. This early introduction to swimming aims to build confidence and water safety skills from a very young age.
Registration will be conducted exclusively through the City and Borough of Juneau’s Parks & Recreation registration catalog, specifically under the “Juneau Pools” tab. Officials emphasize that registrations will not be accepted over the phone, in person, or in advance of the noon opening on Friday. The cost for a series of six lessons is $60, plus applicable taxes. For families facing financial constraints, scholarships are available through the Zach Gordon Youth Center.

Supporting Water Safety in Juneau
The availability of these swim lessons underscores the City and Borough of Juneau’s commitment to promoting water safety within the community. Juneau, surrounded by water, benefits from accessible aquatic facilities like Augustus Brown Pool and Dimond Park Aquatic Center. These lessons provide a foundational skill set for children, potentially reducing the risk of water-related accidents.
The Parks & Recreation department has streamlined the registration process to an online-only system, aiming for efficiency and equitable access. However, this also means potential challenges for residents with limited internet access or those unfamiliar with online registration platforms. The city does not currently offer alternative registration methods for this session.
Contact Information for Assistance
For those with questions during the registration period, Ellen Johnston is available to assist. She can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 907-586-0839, extension 4148.
As March approaches, families are encouraged to prepare for the opening of registration and secure a spot for their little ones. These early swimming experiences can foster a lifelong love of the water and provide essential safety skills. The next update from the City and Borough of Juneau regarding Parks & Recreation programs will likely be the announcement of spring and summer activity schedules, expected in late March or early April.
