Lively and Baldoni Dispute Escalates: swift, Reynolds Perhaps Called as Witnesses
A legal battle surrounding the production of the film It Ends With Us has intensified, with Justin Baldoni seeking to compel testimony from high-profile figures including Taylor Swift and Ryan Reynolds. The move comes as Baldoni’s legal team challenges blake Lively’s attempts to shield the identities of individuals connected to the ongoing litigation.
The dispute centers on allegations made by lively against Baldoni, but has quickly expanded to encompass the roles of other prominent personalities involved in the film’s creation. According to a court filing submitted on Monday, Baldoni’s attorneys argue that Lively’s requests for secrecy do not meet the necessary legal standards, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Lively, 38, initially characterized her husband, Reynolds, as an uninvolved third party in the production issues stemming from the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel. However, Baldoni’s team strongly disputes this claim. “The assertion that Reynolds is not a party and that his communications should be confidential is overly restrictive and absurd,” a statement from the filing reads.
Evidence suggests Reynolds actively participated in the production, reportedly rewriting a scene and directly confronting the director regarding comments made about lively’s weight. These actions, Baldoni’s lawyers contend, establish Reynolds as a crucial witness. The filing also alleges Lively attempted to conceal a broader network of individuals she allegedly enlisted to defend her and wayfarer Studios against Baldoni’s claims. Along with Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emily Blunt, and America Ferrera are among those named.
Taylor Swift’s potential testimony stems from private text messages Lively attempted to keep sealed. However, a journalist, Kjersti Flaa, reported that Swift has indicated she has no objection to their release, stating the singer is “basically saying… it’s okay by me, just show them to the world.” Flaa suggests these texts could be “damaging” to Lively’s case, potentially contradicting her public narrative with evidence of on-set influence.
Lively is also seeking to prevent the release of messages between Reynolds and his agent at WME, and also a letter sent to the Producers Guild of America (PGA).According to flaa, the PGA letter “shows that he had a lot of power in this set… and that hurts his case a lot, as he is posing as a victim.”
The case is scheduled for a hearing on January 22, with a trial date set for May 18, according to ABC News. The initial lawsuit was filed in December 2024, with Lively alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, and intentional emotional distress by Baldoni. she also accused Baldoni of orchestrating a smear campaign targeting her and those associated with the film.
Baldoni has also pursued legal action against The New York Times, initially seeking $250 million in damages for a defamatory article, later increasing the claim to $400 million in a separate January filing. All parties involved have denied the allegations. Newly revealed text messages indicate Baldoni was willing to concede to as much as 95% of Lively’s on-set requests in an effort to maintain a peaceful production habitat.
It Ends With Us proved to be a commercial success, grossing $148 million domestically and $350 million worldwide, and stars Lively, Baldoni, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Brandon Sklenar, and Kevin McKidd. The film explores the complex relationship between Lily Bloom, played by Lively, and neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid, portrayed by Baldoni.
