‘Ne Zha 2’.
China has also contributed significantly to the rise of Asian animation with ‘Ne Zha 2,’ which has become the fifth highest-grossing film in history worldwide. Both ‘Ne Zha 2’ and its 2019 predecessor are based on the 16th-century Chinese novel ‘Investiture of the Gods,’ recounting the story of Ne Zha, a boy born with superhuman powers who returns to confront a mythological demon after his soul is restored with lotus leaves.
After five months in theaters, ‘Ne Zha 2’ grossed over 15.9 billion yuan ($2.219 million), surpassing ‘Avatar’ ($2.9 billion), ‘avengers: Endgame’ ($2.8 billion),’Avatar: the Way of Water’ ($2.3 billion), and falling just below ‘Titanic’s’ $2.3 billion. Both ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ and ‘Demon Slayer’ have been nominated for Best Animated Film at the Golden Globes, to be awarded on January 11, 2026.
