The Thiruvananthapuram District Sessions Court’s denial of anticipatory bail to MLA Rahul Mankootil on charges of sexual assault and forced abortion has ignited a firestorm of political and legal drama, culminating in tense scenes in Kanhangad as authorities responded to rumors of his potential court appearance.
the unfolding situation underscores the gravity of the allegations against the prominent legislator and the intense public scrutiny surrounding the case.
Court Rejects Bail, Cites Prima Facie Evidence
On Thursday, the court rejected Rahul Mankootil’s application for anticipatory bail, finding sufficient prima facie evidence to support charges of rape and forced feticide. The decision followed a thorough examination of digital evidence – including chats and phone conversations – and medical records presented by the prosecution.
“The prosecution was able to convince the court that the charges of rape and forced feticide would prima facie stand,” a senior official stated.
The court specifically rejected Mankootil’s claim that the relationship with the complainant was consensual, highlighting evidence suggesting coercion and manipulation.Crucially, the court noted the complainant sought medical treatment due to physical difficulties following an abortion she underwent despite not wanting to proceed, allegedly due to threats of suicide from the accused. Audio evidence purportedly capturing attempts to force the complainant into an abortion proved notably damaging to Mankootil’s defense.
Kanhangad Standoff: Rumors and Police Withdrawal
The denial of bail triggered speculation about Mankootil’s potential arrest and subsequent appearance in the Hozdurg court. This led to dramatic scenes in Kanhangad, where a police contingent was deployed under the leadership of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP).
However, the situation took an unexpected turn as rumors of Mankootil’s imminent arrival proved unfounded. By 7:30 PM, the magistrate departed the court premises, and the police were later withdrawn.
“The police presence was arranged based on information that Rahul was not in custody but might possibly appear in court,” the district Police Chief explained. Initial reports suggesting Mankootil had been taken into custody by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) were later refuted by the same official.
The deployment and subsequent withdrawal of police were not without incident. Supporters of both the DYFI and the BJP gathered at the court, with reports alleging that Rahul had previously insulted the distribution of DYFI aid packages in hospitals.
Additional Allegations and Ongoing Investigation
The court’s decision comes amidst further scrutiny of mankootil’s conduct. An FIR in a separate rape case, filed by another woman with the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), was also brought before the court. However, the court ultimately rejected the bail application based on the evidence presented in the initial case.
The court emphasized that granting bail to Mankootil, given his position and influence as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), would send the wrong message to society. The prosecution also highlighted the fact that the accused had been absconding for eight days, further undermining his claims
