Olympic Silver Medalist Kanoa Igarashi Finds Unexpected Inspiration at the Nitto ATP Finals

A new cross-sport dialog is emerging, as olympic surfing silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi credits the Nitto ATP Finals with providing valuable insights into the mental and physical demands of elite competition. The 28-year-old athlete, serving as a content creator for the ATP in Turin, found himself deeply impressed by the strategies and resilience of the world’s top tennis players.

The convergence of athletic worlds highlights the universal pursuit of peak performance, regardless of the discipline. Igarashi, based in Lisbon, has quickly developed a passion for tennis, attending both the Rolex Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals to gain a deeper understanding of the sport.

The Mental Game: shared Strategies Across disciplines

“Tennis has always been that sport where it’s the most physical and mentally the most arduous sport in the world,” Igarashi explained. “As a sportsperson, I look at a lot of tennis players as inspiration, and I draw a lot of ideas from them.” He described a whirlwind few weeks, transitioning from the Paris tournament to the ATP Finals, sparking a period of intense reflection on his own training and competitive approach.

Igarashi emphasized the surprising similarities he discovered between surfing and tennis, particularly regarding mental fortitude. He noted the importance of resetting after each point or wave, maintaining focus, and preparing for the next challenge. “Ultimately, we’re trying to become the best no matter what you’re playing: soccer, basketball, tennis, or my sport, surfing,” he said. “There’s so many different ways to do your sport, but the goal is the same.”

Learning from the Pros: breathing Techniques and Pressure Management

The prospect to connect with players like Felix Auger-Aliassime, who qualified for the Turin event, proved particularly insightful. igarashi shared that he spent evenings analyzing his conversations, meticulously taking notes on the techniques and perspectives offered by the tennis stars.

“I went home every day, taking notes off of some of the guys,” Igarashi revealed. “They told me, ‘Hey, have you ever trained like this or have you ever done this kind of breathing exercises? Have you ever looked at your sport in this way?'” He believes these new perspectives will be invaluable as he prepares for his upcoming season.

One standout conversation with Auger-Aliassime centered on breathing exercises and strategies for managing pressure. “Tennis is about resetting after each point, whether you win or lose, and being fresh for the next point. Same with surfing,” Igarashi explained. “We were talking about some breathing stuff and were sharing techniques and the ways we dealt with it in our own way.” He described Auger-Aliassime as “vrey philosophical,” noting a shared intellectual approach to competition.
