Kansas Swim & Dive Team Triumphs Over Houston, Shatters Pool Records

The University of Kansas swim and dive team secured a decisive victory over the University of Houston on Saturday, finishing with a score of 153 to the Cougars’ 147. The Jayhawks’ performance was highlighted by the setting of two new Robinson Natatorium pool records, signaling a strong start to their championship season.
A senior official stated, “Dual meets don’t get much more fun than that.” They added that while the meet presented challenges, the team demonstrated resilience and a relentless competitive spirit. “We had several really good events, but had to overcome a lot of adversity as well. The meet was far from perfect and the team never stopped attacking. We’re so proud of our athletes and will use this as a confidence enhancer going into the championship season.”
Jayhawks Dominate Relay Events
The Kansas A team – comprised of seniors Lydia Lafferty and Caroline Blake, alongside juniors Ryan Johnston and sophomore Anna Gearhart – kicked off the meet with a commanding win in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:39.89, more than two seconds ahead of Houston. The Jayhawks’ depth was further demonstrated by their B squad, featuring freshman Kelsey Healy, senior Molly Robinson, sophomore Ella Hansen, and freshman Sarah Blake, who secured third place with a time of 1:42.26. The C team finished sixth in 1:45.51.
Individual Performances Shine
Sophomore Tait Haag achieved a personal best in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing second with a time of 10:06.20. Fellow freshmen Ivy Solt (10:13.23) and Aubrey Tuthill followed closely behind, finishing fifth and sixth respectively.
Gabi Dyer, a sophomore, added to Kansas’ first-place finishes with a winning time of 1:49.06 in the 200-yard freestyle. Johnston continued to impress, securing second place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.39.
Sophomore Sophie Wallace claimed victory in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 23.49. The Blake sisters, Sarah Blake (23.57) and Caroline Blake (24.00), finished fourth and fifth, showcasing the team’s overall strength in sprint events.
Johnston added another individual second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.69), followed by seniors Molly Robinson (2:19.49) and Aidan Howze in third and fourth place, respectively. Dyer continued her winning streak, dominating the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.00, a full three seconds ahead of the competition. Haag and Solt secured third and fourth place in the event, further solidifying Kansas’ presence in the distance events.
Record-Breaking Performances
Lydia Lafferty broke her own Robinson Pool record in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing with a remarkable time of 53.00, previously set just over a month ago. Gearhart (54.95) and Hansen (55.17) followed in third and fourth place.
In the 400-yard IM, Kansas secured the top three spots. Hailey Farrell took first place at 4:22.44, followed by freshman Sammy Cummins with a lifetime best time of 4:24.03, and sophomore Maya Lambert in fifth.
The Jayhawks concluded the meet with another record-breaking performance. The Kansas A relay team – consisting of Wallace, S. Blake, Hansen, and Lafferty – shattered the previous Robinson Pool record in the 200-yard freestyle relay, held by KU since 2009, by a mere three milliseconds, finishing with a time of 1:32.24.
Diving Dominance
Junior Shiyun Lai showcased exceptional skill in the diving events, sweeping both the 3-meter (369.23 points) and 1-meter (334.43 points) competitions. Senior Lize van Leeuwen contributed to the team’s success, finishing third in the 1-meter dive (290.55 points) and as the runner-up in the 3-meter (320.85 points).

The Jayhawks will continue their dual meet schedule, taking on Rockhurst at Robinson Natatorium on Saturday, December 13, at 1 p.m. CT, to conclude their 2025 season. .
