AI Power Shift: Gemini’s Surge, Apple’s Crossroads, and hollywood’s Looming Mergers

As 2025 approaches its close, the tech landscape is undergoing a dramatic recalibration. A candid discussion with journalist and podcast host Kara Swisher reveals a surprising resurgence by Google’s Gemini in the artificial intelligence arena, challenging the dominance of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Swisher also weighs in on the future of Apple’s AI strategy and the ongoing consolidation within Hollywood.

Google’s AI Comeback: leveraging Existing strengths

Swisher characterizes Google’s recent advancements in AI, notably with Gemini, as a natural progression, capitalizing on its inherent strengths. “Google just took advantage of its obvious assets,” Swisher explained, “they’ve got the technology, the peopel, the data, and the right businesses. They’re the most set up for this era.”

Previously, observers questioned Google’s hesitancy to fully commit to AI progress, suggesting a lack of boldness. Swisher attributes this to a more risk-averse leadership style under Sundar Pichai, though notes the re-emergence of influential co-founder Sergey Brin is injecting a new dynamic.”They were ahead,” she stated, “they just didn’t take the bet because they were afraid of it.”

The question now becomes whether openai will ultimately follow the path of technological pioneers like Netscape, overtaken by a larger, more established competitor. “Is OpenAI ‘Netscape’ or ‘Google’?” swisher pondered. “It’s feeling a little Netscapey these days.”

Apple’s AI Strategy: Integration Over Innovation?

While Google and OpenAI battle for AI supremacy,Apple finds itself in a different position. The company is facing scrutiny over its lagging progress in the AI space, but Swisher suggests Apple may not need to own the underlying AI technology. “They didn’t have to own Maps, did they?” she pointed out. “They used Google.”

Instead, Apple’s strength lies in its ecosystem and ability to seamlessly integrate existing technologies. swisher believes a key possibility lies in enhancing the functionality of AirPods, possibly incorporating cameras to provide real-time contextual awareness. “if you put a camera in those and they could see as you go through the world…who’s the company who is most able to do that? Google and Apple.”

She expressed skepticism about the current push for wearable AI devices like glasses, arguing that the form factor isn’t universally appealing. “Does it have to be glasses on your face? Because not everybody wants to wear those.”

Swisher also questioned the leadership of CEO Tim Cook, stating bluntly, “He should leave now.”

Hollywood’s Consolidation: Mergers and Hostile Bids

The entertainment industry is also undergoing significant upheaval. Swisher believes Disney is facing an existential crisis and needs to merge with another company or be acquired. Potential suitors include Apple or Comcast. “they’ve got plenty of people,” she said, “but it’s too small in today’s environment.”

The ongoing saga surrounding Paramount and its potential acquisition is particularly fraught, with a recent hostile cash bid adding another layer of complexity. Swisher dismissed the bid as lacking a sound economic rationale, criticizing the argument that a relationship with Donald Trump justifies the deal. “Thier only argument was ‘we’re friends with Donald Trump.’ That seems noneconomic to me.”

she emphasized the need for consolidation in Hollywood, driven by a historical lack of innovation. “These things need to merge,” Swisher asserted. “Hollywood didn’t innovate for so long.” She noted that companies are often more focused on simply owning content than on leveraging technology to enhance it. “They just want to own it. It’s just a toy.”
