He is considered an innovator and is no stranger to NRW: Kay Voges is to become the new director of the Cologne drama. However, it will be a while before he comes.

Köln.

Kay Voges, currently head of the Vienna Volkstheater, is to become the new director of the Cologne drama. Voges will be proposed to the main committee of the Cologne city council on Monday by Mayor Henriette Reker (independent) and the selection committee, Reker’s spokesman confirmed. Several media had reported.

Voges succeeds Stefan Bachmann, who is moving to the Burgtheater in Vienna for the 2024/25 season. For a year there is then an interim solution with in-house director Rafael Sanchez. Voges arrives for the 2025/26 season. By then, after more than a decade in transitional quarters, the Cologne theater should have moved back to the renovated main building in the city center.

Before moving to Vienna, 51-year-old Voges had made a name for himself through his love of experimentation as director of the Dortmund theater. He and his team have been named NRW Theater of the Year three times in a row. With the play “The Borderline Procession” they received an invitation to the renowned Berlin Theatertreffen.

Voges became a source of inspiration for other theater makers in particular by bringing more digitization tools into the productions. For example, cameras on the stage captured live images that gave the audience a different perspective.

Voges was born in Düsseldorf in 1972 and began his stage career as an assistant director at the Oberhausen Theater. As a freelance director, he directed productions in Bonn, Kassel and Dresden, among other places, before being appointed artistic director in Dortmund in 2010. He stayed in the Ruhr area city for ten years before moving to Vienna in 2020. (dpa)
