Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania Consider Joint Visa for AFCON 2027

Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are developing a joint visa framework to simplify border crossings for international football fans attending the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, officials confirmed during a stadium inspection in Arusha.

The 36th edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, according to the Confederation of African Football. As the three host nations prepare for the continent’s premier football showcase—marking the first time the event is co-hosted across three countries—governments are working to eliminate travel friction that typically slows down multi-nation sporting events.

Arusha Stadium Inspection Reveals 95 Percent Completion

The common visa initiative gained formal visibility during an official site visit to the Arusha Pamoja AFCON Stadium in Tanzania. Members of the East African Legislative Assembly joined regional ministers to evaluate venue readiness.

During the inspection, the legislative delegation was briefed on construction milestones. The facility, designed to accommodate about 32,500 spectators, has reached 95 percent completion.

Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, chairperson of the East African Community Council of Ministers and Uganda’s first deputy prime minister, confirmed the visa planning during the tour. Consultations among sports ministers began in April, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni endorsed the initiative in July. However, the three partner states have not yet published a final implementation timetable or formal agreement.

Bridging the East African Tourist Visa Gap

The proposed tournament arrangement addresses a notable structural limitation in regional travel policy. The existing East African Tourist Visa permits eligible travelers to move freely between Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, but it explicitly excludes Tanzania.

Because all three tournament hosts must be accessible to traveling supporters, a separate framework is required. Officials intend for the mechanism to allow international visitors to attend matches across different countries while simultaneously exploring regional tourism attractions.

Governments anticipate that smoother border crossings will encourage supporters to extend their stays, directing spending toward hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and local transport networks rather than confining tourist revenue to a single match venue.

Administrative Gaps Threaten Regional Border Protocols

Despite high-level political backing, critical administrative questions remain unanswered. Authorities have yet to establish eligibility requirements, fee structures, visa validity periods, or standardized border-crossing protocols.

Lawmakers have urged caution regarding execution. Abdullah Makame, a Tanzanian member of the East African Legislative Assembly, noted that the scheme’s ultimate success rests entirely on clear guidelines and consistent enforcement at every regional entry point.

With the opening match scheduled for June 2027, time is narrowing for regional authorities to finalize administrative agreements, test border coordination, and market the joint travel procedures to international supporters planning their itineraries.
