Thiruvananthapuram ∙ The Raj Bhavan itself issued a notification after the Vice Chancellor rejected the Governor’s ultimatum to implement the order expelling the 15 members who boycotted the Kerala University Senate meeting. As directed by the Governor, a notification was issued in the Gazette Extraordinary to give effect to this measure.

VC Dr. V. P. Mahadevan Pillai, who refused to comply with the governor’s order, had given notice to the 15 ousted senate members to attend the next four special senate meetings. The Governor takes seriously the action of the VC who disobeys his orders as Chancellor. He was participating in a program at Nagpur University yesterday and may take a decision regarding the VC today. The Governor was of the position that no action was required against the VC who is retiring on the 24th. According to legal experts, the process of expelling all 15 members of the Senate came into effect after the Raj Bhavan issued the notification.

The 2 syndicate members expelled by the Governor attended the Chief Minister’s official program on Tuesday. Instead of implementing the Governor’s order to expel 15 Senate members, the VC wrote a letter to the Governor seeking clarification on the order. In response to this, the governor issued an ultimatum that his decision should be implemented immediately. But the registrar informed the Raj Bhavan that the VC had gone for Sabarimala darshan and no one had been assigned the task in his place, so the order could not be implemented. The VC reached the office at night after the Raj Bhavan issued the notification.

The Senate meeting held in August had passed a resolution to cancel the unilateral formation of the search committee by the governor. According to the university rules, the decision of the senate can be revoked or changed only after one year. Two-thirds of the members must call for a special meeting of the Senate to reconsider the decision. The notice given to the members says that the Senate meets in the event of such request.
