BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s family has appealed to the government to extend the release period. Besides, Khaleda Zia’s permission has been sought to be taken abroad for treatment in the application. The application has already reached the law ministry from the home ministry.

A decision on this may be taken on Monday (March 18). However, sources said there is no legal option to send them abroad for treatment.

Last year, on September 12 last year, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification extending the release period of Khaleda Zia by six months. That term ends on March 24.

Shayrul Kabir Khan, a member of BNP’s media cell, confirmed the request for extension of Khaleda Zia’s release. He said that his younger brother Shamim Iskandar applied to the Home Ministry on March 6 to extend the release period of the BNP Chairperson. Khaleda Zia’s doctors advised to take treatment abroad. Therefore Khaleda Zia has been released and taken abroad for treatment.

In this regard, Law Minister Anisul Haque told the media that it has come to the Ministry of Law from Home Affairs to take a legal opinion on the application. A decision on the application will be made on Monday.

Incidentally, on February 8, 2018, the court sentenced Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. Since then he was in jail for almost two years. Later, when the outbreak of the pandemic coronavirus increased, on March 25, 2020 former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was released by an executive order of the government suspending her sentence on two conditions. The first is that he has to take treatment from home. The second condition is that he cannot go abroad. He was then released for 6 months at the request of his family amid the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, his release period has been extended every six months on the plea of the family.
