Killarney, Ireland – A wedding in County Kerry unfolded with a touch of serendipity, mirroring the unpredictable nature of the games often celebrated in the region. Kiara Carolan, originally from Killorglin, and Kealen Conboy, hailing from Claremorris, exchanged vows at St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney on a day steeped in personal significance and, despite an orange weather warning, blessed with clear skies. Their story, like a well-fought Gaelic football match, involved a bit of luck, a broken wing, and a winning connection. The celebration wasn’t just a union of two individuals, but a poignant acknowledgement of loved ones lost, and a vibrant testament to the enduring power of community and Irish tradition.
The couple, both primary school teachers based in Limerick City, first met eleven years ago at a Halloween party at D’Icon, a popular Limerick venue. As Kealen recounts, the initial spark wasn’t a grand romantic gesture, but a clumsy mishap and a simple act of kindness. “Kiara was dressed up as a fairy but broke a wing due to some questionable dance moves,” he shared. “I noticed the broken wing from across the dance floor and tried to fix it. I had no luck with fixing the broken wing, but I did receive Kiara’s number.” That initial attempt at repair blossomed into a relationship that culminated in a proposal during a beach stroll in Kilkee, County Clare, on May 19, 2024.
A Day Marked by Remembrance
The joy of the wedding was interwoven with a deep sense of remembrance. Both Kiara and Kealen carried the memory of loved ones lost. Kiara’s sister, Tara Carolan, who passed away last year, was honored as her “forever maid of honour.” Kiara explained, “She booked all the wedding dress appointments and picked the shop – The White Ivy was the only choice in her eyes. She helped choose and approve the wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, and the reception venue. Tara was such a big part of the day, and we miss her dearly.” A photograph of Tara was placed on the altar, and another was carried in Kiara’s bouquet, a touching tribute to her enduring presence. Kealen’s father, Sean Conboy, was also remembered with a photograph displayed on the altar, acknowledging his absence on this significant day.
Irish Tradition and a Touch of Dance
The wedding party reflected the couple’s strong ties to their communities. Kiara’s cousin, Orla Murphy, served as chief bridesmaid, alongside friends Mairead Rafferty, Emer Moore, and Elaine Carroll. Her nieces, Freya Carolan and Síofra Glynn, added a touch of sweetness as flowergirls. Kealen was supported by his best man, John Hutton, and groomsmen Aidan Conboy, Jarlath Conboy, Sean Doherty, and his nephew and godson, Calvin Conboy, who served as junior groomsman and ringbearer. The reception, held at The Brehon Hotel, was infused with Irish culture, notably through Kiara’s lifelong passion for Irish dance. Having worked and performed at Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe for fifteen years, she and her dance troupe brought a vibrant energy to the celebration, performing a special routine during the festivities.
Weathering the Storm and a Scenic Photoshoot
The wedding day wasn’t without its anxieties. An orange weather warning had been issued, raising concerns about the outdoor elements. However, the couple was fortunate to experience favorable conditions, allowing for a picturesque photoshoot through the Gap of Dunloe. “I think we spent more time on the weather app than anything else that week, our screen time for that alone was embarrassing,” Kiara admitted. The photoshoot culminated in a celebratory pint at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a location particularly meaningful to Kiara given her years performing there. She added, “We also had our day-two [celebration] here, we wouldn’t have it anywhere else.”
Kiara’s bridal attire was equally noteworthy. She wore a Rosa Clara ‘Amado’ gown from The White Ivy for the ceremony, transitioning into an ‘Anna’ dress by Rosie Etienne Bridal for her Irish dance performance, and finally, a ‘Feeling of Forever’ dress from Lulus for the later celebrations. The bridal hair styling was expertly handled by Noelle Casey, while Sharon O’Sullivan provided the makeup artistry. The groom and his party were impeccably dressed in tuxedos from Esquires in Limerick City.
The newlyweds have since embarked on a minimoon in Vilamoura, Portugal, and are planning a more extended honeymoon in Dubai. Their story, a blend of playful beginnings, heartfelt remembrance, and vibrant celebration, serves as a reminder that even amidst life’s challenges, love and community can prevail. The couple expressed their gratitude to their families, including Nuala Conboy, Kealen’s mother, and Joan and Michael Carolan, Kiara’s parents, as well as to Johnny Mahon, Tara’s fiancé, whose presence was particularly meaningful.
As they begin their married life, Kiara and Kealen carry with them not only the joy of their wedding day but also the enduring memories of those who could not be there to celebrate with them. Their next confirmed step is the start of their honeymoon in Dubai, a journey they will embark on with hearts full of love and remembrance.
