Kid Rock has been accused of miming during a performance at a MAGA-friendly alternative to the Super Bowl half time show.
The controversy unfolded as a direct response to the official Super Bowl halftime show featuring Bad Bunny, Green Day and Lady Gaga, a lineup that drew ire from some conservative circles. Incensed fans organized their own ‘All-American’ concert at Levi’s Stadium in California to run concurrently with the main event. Rock performed alongside country artists Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert and Gabby Barnett.
The situation highlights a growing divide in American culture, where separate media ecosystems and even competing Super Bowl experiences are emerging.
The central accusation revolves around Rock’s performance of his 1999 hit, “Bawitdaba.” A clip circulating online shows the 55-year-old rapper appearing to move his mouth independently of the vocals, and at times, not matching the audio at all, leading many to believe the performance was pre-recorded and lip-synced.
Social media users were quick to react. “Kid Rock is blatantly lip syncing, it’s all prerecorded & he wasn’t even trying,” one user posted on X. Another added, “Kid Rock forgets his lyrics during his song showing all the MAGA Far Right that he wasn’t even singing. What a complete and utter embarrassment.”
A third fan commented, “Kid Rock couldn’t even be bothered to sing live. Instead, some truly awful lip-syncing.”
Prior to the concert, Rock explained the motivation behind the event, which was organized by Turning Point USA. “There’s a big portion of this country, like it or not, that’s underserved entertainment-wise,” he said. “We’re just (going to) go play for our base. You know, people who love America, love football, love Jesus.”
The alternative concert drew an estimated 6.1 million viewers on YouTube, though the number of viewers motivated by curiosity remains unknown. This viewership paled in comparison to the 120 million plus who tuned in to watch Bad Bunny, Green Day and Lady Gaga perform during the official Super Bowl halftime show.
Former President Trump weighed in on the official halftime show, calling it “absolutely terrible” and “one of the worst, EVER!” on his Truth Social platform.
Amidst the entertainment spectacle, the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots 29 to 13.
