Kingfishr Christmas Number One: Dream Come True | Irish Band Tops Charts

Kingfishr Claims Historic Irish Christmas Number One, Ushering in New Era for Irish Music

A groundbreaking moment for irish music has arrived as Kingfishr has secured the coveted Christmas number one slots in both the singles and album charts. This marks the first time in the history of the Irish Official Chart Company that two top album spots will be held by Irish acts, signaling a surge in domestic musical success, rivaling perennial Christmas favorites like Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” to reach the top of the singles chart. The Irish Recorded Music Association confirmed the band’s dual chart-topping achievement today.

Their album, “Halycon,” will officially claim the Christmas number one album position. “Killeagh,” a heartfelt tribute to guitarist Eoin Fitzgibbon’s home village and GAA club, initially reached number one in May and has experienced a resurgence in popularity during the Christmas season.

“It’s been the best year of our lives. We’ll never be able to thank people for what they’ve done for us,” the band shared, expressing their gratitude. “Dreams really do come true.”

Kingfishr is poised to embark on a major tour next year, with performances scheduled for approximately 50,000 fans across Belfast, Cork, and Dublin. The origins of “Killeagh” are as charming as the song itself, as recounted by Keogh during an interview with RTÉ’s News at One.

“As all good stories do, it started in the pub,” Keogh explained. He detailed how Fitzgibbon,a longtime member of the Killeagh GAA club in County Cork, was approached by a persistent local resident, affectionately nicknamed “Yank,” who lamented the club’s lack of a dedicated anthem.

“He ran into a lad when he was down home, yank, and your man was badgering him, saying, ‘We’ve no song for the club and the junior team are doing well’,” Keogh recalled. Fitzgibbon jokingly promised to write a song if the team reached the final, a promise he was compelled to fulfill when they did. “The boys made it to the final and we were in the studio anyway so Fitz was getting calls from Yank left right and center, and he was basically saying, ‘This lad won’t leave me alone, we’ll have to do something for them’.”

With limited time, the band quickly brainstormed the essence of Killeagh. “We had half an hour spare so we put something together. ‘What are the things in Killeagh?’ He said,’There’s a river, there’s a woods, there’s a pub and there’s a GAA pitch’. I was like,’We’ll fire those down and figure it out from there so’.” The resulting song, initially intended as a simple favor, unexpectedly exploded in popularity after gaining traction on TikTok, becoming “king of an anthem” throughout the summer.

Kingfishr’s success builds upon a foundation of supporting established artists such as Bruce Springsteen, George ezra, James Bay, and Snow Patrol.

the festivity of irish musical talent extends beyond Kingfishr. The trio Amble has achieved significant recognition with their album “Reverie,” becoming the biggest-selling and most-streamed Irish album of the year and securing the second-highest ranking on the Christmas week charts. Meanwhile, Fontaines DC continues to garner international acclaim, with their album “Romance” remaining in the top ten charts for Christmas week.

This Christmas season represents a watershed moment for Irish music, demonstrating the vibrant creativity and growing success of homegrown artists on both a national and international stage.
