Thiruvananthapuram: Vismaya (24), a native of Kollam, was convicted in the murder case of her husband S. Kiran Kumar, who was jailed for gardening. Kiran, the accused in the case, was dismissed from the service while he was an Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector. Kiran, who was sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, works in a garden inside the Poojappura Central Jail wall.
Some of the 9.5 acres within the wall are under cultivation. Ornamental plants have also been planted in some places as part of the prison beautification. All this will be taken care of by selected prisoners including Kiran Kumar. Work on the garden will begin at 7.15 am. Kiran gets a daily wage of Rs 63. After one year he will get a daily wage of 127 rupees.
Breakfast and lunch are intermittent. Evening tea is available. The prisoners will be taken to the cell at 5.45 pm after dinner. Kirankumar lives in the fifth block. Officials said those who come to jail will not be allowed to work outside the walls in the first place.
Dangerous people, those involved in news-related cases, and regular criminals are not allowed to work outside. Once in jail, you must work inside the prison until you gain the trust of the authorities. The law requires that all convicted prisoners work. Poojappura Jail has a vegetable garden and a garden nursery. Vegetables are sold in the jail on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Officials said the average sale was Rs 10,000.
In addition to the sentence, Kiran was also fined Rs 12.55 lakh. Of this, Rs 4 lakh should be given to Vismaya’s parents. If the fine is not paid, he faces up to 27 months and 15 days in prison. This is the first time in the state that such a large fine has been imposed under the Dowry Prohibition Act. Vismaya was found dead on June 21, 2021 at her husband’s house in Sasthamcotta Poruvazhi. The marriage took place on May 30, 2020.
