- The incident highlights the challenges of communication in remote areas.
Relatives raised the alarm around 8 p.m. Saturday, triggering a search operation coordinated by the Maritime and Air Rescue Centre (JRCC). A helicopter from Norway and an ambulance helicopter from Gällivare were dispatched to locate the aircraft, which had departed from Kiruna airport. The planned flight was a short, eight-mile journey north, according to johan Wahlström, press spokesperson at the JRCC, who provided the update around 9:30 p.m.
satellite Phone Issues Prompt Search
One of the helicopters eventually landed near the couple’s cabin after the crew observed smoke. Fortunately, the situation wasn’t as dire as it initially appeared. Wahlström confirmed around 10:30 p.m. that the couple had arrived at the cabin safely.
“They have found the couple. They are fine and in the cabin,” Wahlström stated. “They have flown and landed but had problems contacting relatives via satellite phone.”
The incident underscores the potential difficulties travelers can face when relying on satellite communication in sparsely populated regions. While the couple’s safe arrival brought relief, the situation served as a reminder of the need for backup communication plans.
