If you stop to think about it, the kitchen is one of the rooms in our home in which we spend the most time. Many times not only to prepare our menus, but we also eat there, or do cleaning work (washing machine, dishwasher…) and they are even a meeting space for family and/or friends. Therefore, it is very important to know what type of window we should install.

Whether it is to purchase a new home or to renovate our kitchen, it is important to stop and think about what the window model that we can placer. From Healthy Housing we are going to do a general review of the classification of the most common windows in the kitchen:

Most common types of windows for our kitchen

  • sliding windows: those that slide horizontally. They are very functional for kitchens that are not very large, since they do not require additional space when opened. They provide a good amount of natural light and are easy to clean.
  • Casement windows: thanks to their hinge system, they move in or out. This design allows efficient opening and closing, as well as facilitating cleaning and maintenance. They are very popular for their ventilation and insulation capacity, while allowing the passage of natural light.
  • sash windows: They are characterized by opening and closing thanks to the vertical sliding of one of their leaves. In some cases, both leaves are movable, which allows equal air entry and exit. Are ideal for small kitchenssince they do not take up additional space when opened.
  • Swivel ventanas: its opening is to one side, rotating around a vertical or horizontal axis. They are designed, above all, for modern kitchens and provide a wider opening than other types of windows. They guarantee great insulation and airtightness thanks to the pressure joint closure.

Criteria for a correct choice of window

  • Size and orientation: You should ensure that the window is proportional to the size of your kitchen and provides the desired amount of light and ventilation. Likewise, if you can choose the orientation of the window you have to take into account the climate in which you live. If it is cold, look for a south orientation, and if it is warm, north is better.
  • Material: Windows can be made of different materials, such as wood, aluminum or PVC. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of aesthetics, durability and thermal insulation. But the truth is that the kitchen is a room that needs materials that are resistant to temperature changes, as is the case of PVC, which also requires minimal maintenance and has a useful life of more than 50 years.
  • Acoustic and thermal insulation: You must take into account the level of acoustic and thermal insulation that the window offers, especially if you live in a noisy area or with extreme temperature changes. The greater the insulation capacity, the greater the energy savings..
  • Style: the possibility of finishes that exist on the market allow you to give your kitchen a more modern look or, on the contrary, give it a more rustic touch with metallic or wooden finishes. PVC windows even allow you to choose one color or texture for the exterior and another for the interior of the window.

In general terms, there are two aspects that have fundamental weight when choosing kitchen windows: the amount of natural lighting that we can achieve and the ventilation and insulation that it allows us. The more natural light the window model we have chosen guarantees us, the better. Since, apart from influencing our mood, it will mean less use of artificial light and the resulting savings. Regarding ventilation, let’s not forget that the kitchen is one of the rooms that generates the most odors, so it is essential that it can be ventilated in a simple and efficient way.
