A new era of rail travel has dawned in Malaysia with the official launch of the Electric Train Service (ETS) connecting Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru. The service, which began a media preview run on December 11th and officially opened to the public on December 12th, promises to dramatically reduce travel time between the two major cities, bolstering both tourism and regional connectivity.
A Long-Awaited Infrastructure Project Comes to Fruition
The new ETS marks the completion of the 192km Gemas-Johor Bahru electrified double-track rail project, a significant investment in Malaysia’s rail infrastructure. Originally slated for completion in October 2021, the project faced over three years of delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and challenges in land acquisition. The completion of the southern electric line effectively electrifies the entire west coast rail backbone, stretching from Padang Besar in the north to Johor Bahru.
Enhanced Comfort and Convenience for Passengers
The six-coach train boasts a capacity of 312 passengers, with a configuration of five standard coaches and one dedicated business-class coach. Passengers can expect a comfortable journey with amenities including a plug point at every seat, four toilets, and a dedicated “coach bistro” offering onboard meals.
The business-class experience is elevated with wider seats, a private toilet, complimentary meals, individual TV displays with free WiFi, access to movies, a route map, and an in-seat meal-ordering system. Recognizing the diverse needs of travelers, a prayer room is also available for Muslim passengers in one of the middle coaches.
Streamlined Service and Increased Connectivity
From December 12th, four existing KL Sentral-Kluang services were extended to JB Sentral, providing a direct rail link for passengers in southern Malaysia. The daily schedule includes two departures from KL Sentral (7:45 am and 5:35 pm) and two from JB Sentral (8:40 am and 4:20 pm). A revised schedule will take effect on January 1, 2026, with the first service departing KL Sentral at 7:55 am.
According to a company release, KTMB anticipates high demand for the route, particularly during the year-end school holidays in both Malaysia and Singapore, and with the anticipated increase in cross-border traffic. A senior official stated that the new ETS route will significantly improve mobility for residents of Johor heading to KL Sentral, facilitating connections to destinations throughout the north and the East Coast.
Economic Boost and Tourism Potential
The improved rail connectivity is expected to provide a significant boost to the tourism industry and the broader Malaysian economy. The enhanced accessibility will likely attract more visitors, including those from Singapore, to Johor and other regions of Malaysia.
A normal one-way fare between JB and KL starts at RM82 (approximately $27 USD). Tickets went on sale December 9th via the KITS Style mobile app, KTMB kiosks, and the operator’s official website, with fares available for travel through the end of May 2026. A limited-time 30% discount, utilizing the promo code “JBBEST,” was offered to celebrate the launch, and was fully redeemed within the first day of sales.
The launch of the ETS represents a major step forward for Malaysia’s transportation infrastructure, promising faster, more comfortable, and more convenient travel for both residents and visitors alike.
