Hanoi, Vietnam – For the first time, the Cryptography Technical Academy (KMA) is broadening its admissions criteria to include assessments of aptitude and thinking skills, alongside the existing requirement of an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. The shift, announced today, reflects a growing emphasis on holistic evaluation as the academy prepares to welcome a new cohort of students in 2026. KMA plans to recruit 520 students at its Hanoi campus and 80 students at its Ho Chi Minh City campus this year. The academy will continue to consider applicants who have excelled in national-level academic competitions – specifically, those who have won first, second, or third prize in the national excellent student selection exam in mathematics, computer science, or a national science and technology award. However, the addition of aptitude assessments offers a new pathway for prospective students to demonstrate their potential.
New Assessment Methods
Traditionally, KMA admissions have relied heavily on high school graduation exam scores, utilizing six subject combinations: A00 (mathematics, physics, chemistry), A01 (mathematics, physics, English), X26 (mathematics, English, computer science), X06 (mathematics, physics, computer science), X07 (mathematics, physics, industrial technology), and K01 (mathematics, literature, physics). These methods will remain in place, but will now be supplemented by the new assessments. The academy is incorporating four different competency exams into its evaluation process: those organized by Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi Pedagogical University, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Candidates with provincial-level awards in mathematics, physics, or computer science will likewise receive bonus points, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 points on a 30-point scale. This provides an additional incentive for students to pursue excellence in these key fields.
IELTS Remains a Factor
The IELTS requirement remains a key component of the admissions process. KMA awards bonus points to candidates with an IELTS certificate of 5.5 or higher, demonstrating a commitment to English language proficiency. While specific scoring requirements weren’t detailed, the academy’s continued emphasis on IELTS suggests its importance in preparing students for a globalized field like cryptography.
Last year, admission scores at the Cryptography Technical Academy ranged from 23.2 to 24.42 points, with the highest scores achieved by students applying to the information security program at the Hanoi campus. The introduction of the new assessment methods is expected to potentially shift these score ranges, as the academy seeks to identify students with a broader range of skills and aptitudes.
