New Delhi: 21st February is a very special day for the history of India and Pakistan. The reason why this day is important for both the countries is because of a treaty. In fact, on 21 February 1999, the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif had signed the declaration to maintain peace between the two. Which is called Lahore Declaration.

What was in this Lahore Manifesto

This declaration was signed by the then Prime Ministers of both the countries. In this, consent was given on many issues ranging from Kashmir issue to prevention of use of nuclear weapons. In that declaration, India and Pakistan agreed to take immediate steps to prevent the accidental or unauthorized use of nuclear weapons. Along with this, both the countries agreed to strengthen the dialogue process to resolve mutual differences. Jammu and Kashmir was also talked about in this Lahore manifesto. Both countries had agreed that the issue would be resolved peacefully. Both the countries had also agreed to promote trade. Along with all these issues, some other issues were also mentioned in this Lahore Declaration.

What was the basis of Lahore Declaration?

To reduce the tension between India and Pakistan, a peace process was discussed between the two countries. On 23 September 1998, both the governments signed an agreement for the well-being and security of the citizens of their respective countries. Which was made the basis of Lahore Declaration. Only after that, on 11 February 1999, the then PM of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee went to Pakistan during his state visit. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee reached Bagha, he was warmly welcomed. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif welcomed him and gave him a guard of honour.

The formula for coming together is ready! Alliance may be announced soon between AAP and Congress

Kargil started between the two countries in May 1999 itself
Just a few months after the signing of the Lahore Declaration, the Kargil War started in May and relations between the two changed completely. When Pakistani troops intruded into Kashmir, Indian troops drove them out and captured the disputed area. Thousands of soldiers of both the countries were killed in this war that lasted for two months. After which the Lahore Treaty stopped and then there was no discussion regarding this treaty between the two countries.

Pakistan does nefarious activities every day

Even though the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif had shown hope for peace by signing the Lahore Declaration at that time. However, that hope has also vanished with time. Now every day Pakistan keeps hatching some conspiracy against India. Apart from this, it also violates ceasefire on the border many times. At the same time, in the Lahore Pact, consent was given for peaceful talks on Kashmir issue. Every day Pakistan keeps doing some nefarious activity regarding it. Due to which there are still many challenges in the relations between the two countries.
