From Switzerland to Stellar Debut
Peat, a three-time Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year, openly expressed feeling “kind of forgotten” while representing the USA 19-and-under team in Switzerland this summer. He told Hoops HQ he was determined to “remind people and show them what I’m about,” and he did just that. His performance against Florida wasn’t just a strong showing for a freshman; it was a takeover.
“It was a coming out party for him, so to speak,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said. “Everyone’s known about him, but no one’s really, really studied him and watched him, and he’s a special player.”
Peat’s 30-point performance makes him only the second Big 12 freshman to debut with 30 or more points, joining Kansas State’s Michael Beasley, who scored 32 in his debut in 2007. He added 7 rebounds and 5 assists, showcasing a well-rounded game that belies his freshman status.

Peat comes from a strong athletic background. He is the son of Todd Peat, a nine-season NFL guard, and the brother of Andrus Peat, a three-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman currently with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
His summer experience with Team USA, where he won gold at the 19-and-under World Cup in Switzerland, proved invaluable. “He ran some of the same sets at USA, so coming to U of A in the fall, it was pretty easy to adapt to those,” Peat explained. He credited the rigorous practices and supportive coaching staff, particularly Lloyd and Bradley, for his readiness. “He just makes my game so easy… he’s one of the best point guards in the country, if not the best point guard in the country.”
Florida Falters in Season Opener
Florida was led by Thomas Haugh with 27 points, while Xaivian Lee added 14 and Alex Condon and Micah Handlogten each contributed 11. However, the Gators’ shooting woes in the second half – 14-of-38 for 36.8% – proved fatal. They became the first reigning champion to lose its season opener since Syracuse fell to Notre Dame in 2003-04.
Arizona shot 49.2% (30-of-61) from the field, capitalizing on Florida’s defensive lapses. The Gators initially surged to a 12-point lead, hitting 11 of their first 16 shots, but Arizona responded with a 32-16 run, fueled by 11-of-18 shooting. Ivan Kharchenkov added 12 points for the Wildcats despite briefly leaving the game with an injury.
