A dominant performance by Brazil has dashed the hopes of the Korean women’s handball team, eliminating them from contention for a quarterfinal berth at the 27th Women’s Handball World Championship. The defeat, 32-25, marks Korea’s third loss of the tournament and confirms their last-place finish in Group 4.
Korea’s campaign came to an end on Thursday, December 7th, at Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany, following a challenging match against the South American powerhouse. Despite a promising start, the team ultimately succumbed to Brazil’s strategic adjustments and relentless attack.
Early Promise Gives Way to Brazilian Dominance
The initial stages of the game offered a glimmer of hope for the Korean side.Despite an early two-minute suspension for Kim Bo-eun just 36 seconds into play, Korea battled back, tying the score at 9-9 around the 17th minute thanks to consecutive goals from Jeon Ji-yeon. Jeong Ji-in then briefly put Korea ahead, 10-9. However, this momentum was short-lived.
Brazil responded decisively, shifting to a 5-1 defensive system in the 20th minute. This tactical change proved immediately effective, stifling Korea’s offence and triggering a prolonged scoring drought. Korea endured a frustrating 11-minute stretch without a goal, spanning from the 21st minute of the first half to the 32nd minute of the second.
“The shift to a 5-1 defense was a turning point,” one analyst noted. “It completely disrupted Korea’s offensive flow and allowed Brazil to gain control of the game.”
Alexandra Priscila Do Nascimento Martinez capitalized on the defensive shift, leading Brazil to a six-goal unanswered run and a commanding 16-11 lead at halftime.
Second Half Struggles Seal Korea’s Fate
korea attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, narrowing the gap to 18-16 as their backcourt players and wingers found their rhythm. However,Brazil’s star player,Bruna de Paula, proved unstoppable. De Paula’s all-around performance – scoring, intercepting, and assisting – extended Brazil’s lead to 21-16 by the 42nd minute.
A Korean attempt at a 7-6 attack failed to yield results, allowing Brazil to further solidify their advantage.Even with De Paula briefly resting, Brazil continued to dominate, scoring six goals while conceding only two, pushing the score to 27-18 and effectively ending the contest.
Individual Performances and Tournament Outlook
Jeon ji-yeon led Korea’s scoring efforts with 7 goals, followed by Kim Bo-eun with 4 and Kim Min-seo with 3. Goalkeeper Park Sae-young delivered a strong performance with 11 saves, but it wasn’t enough to counter Brazil’s potent attack.
Bruna de Paula was rightfully named the Hummel Player of the Match, contributing 3 goals and 5 assists to Brazil’s victory.
With three wins in the preliminaries and this latest triumph, Brazil (6 points) now ranks second in their group, trailing only Norway (6 points), and is well-positioned to advance to the quarterfinals. Korea, having lost all three of their matches, finishes at the bottom of Group 4 and will not progress further in the tournament.
