Korean Air and Asiana Airlines Launch Upcycled Safety Initiative with Community Donations

Meta Description: Korean Air and Asiana Airlines demonstrate commitment to ESG principles by donating 350 upcycled safety items to local communities in Seoul.

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines reinforced their dedication to environmental sustainability and social responsibility on Thursday, November 29th, with the donation of 350 upcycled safety doll keyrings and pouches to the Gangseo Fire Station and Zion Orphanage in Seoul. The items were crafted from recycled Korean Air in-flight tablecloths and discarded cabin crew uniforms from both airlines, marking a significant step in their joint ESG (environmental, social, and governance) initiatives.

Innovative Safety Tools from Recycled Materials

The donated safety doll keyrings are designed to provide a crucial safety feature. Constructed using Korean Air in-flight tablecloth material, the dolls emit a loud alarm when activated – by simply grabbing the doll and pulling the ring – offering a readily available tool to call for help in emergency situations. These keyrings will be distributed to participants in fire safety training programs hosted by the Gangseo Fire Department and to children residing at Zion Orphanage, serving as vital safety supplies to help prevent accidents.

Alongside the keyrings, the airlines also donated pouches created from the same recycled materials. These pouches feature a decorative airplane patch, adding a touch of design to the practical items.

Employee Involvement and ESG Commitment

The production of these upcycling items wasn’t solely a corporate endeavor. Approximately 150 employees from both Korean Air and Asiana Airlines volunteered their time on November 23rd at Korean Air’s headquarters, dedicating their lunch breaks to tasks such as folding packaging boxes, inserting goods and message cards, and attaching stickers. This hands-on participation underscores the companies’ commitment to their ESG goals.

This initiative builds upon previous efforts. In August, Korean Air produced auxiliary battery pouches utilizing discarded cabin crew uniforms and firefighter firefighting suits, launching an internal donation campaign for employees. Proceeds from the sale of these pouches were then donated to the Firefighting Family Hope Sharing Association, an organization supporting the families of firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

“Korean Air and Asiana Airlines will continue their joint social contribution activities to create a safe community,” stated a senior official. “We will continue to strengthen ESG management by producing and donating various upcycling products so that we can leap forward as the most loved airline in the world, and strive to improve our corporate image through giving back to the community.”

The airlines’ commitment to sustainability and community engagement signals a broader trend within the aviation industry towards responsible corporate citizenship. This latest initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to minimizing environmental impact while simultaneously supporting vulnerable populations and promoting safety awareness.
