Dagmar Jandová, known to Czech television audiences as the “Kvízová dáma” (Quiz Lady) from the popular game show Na lovu (The Hunt), has develop into a recognizable face in the Czech Republic. Beyond the bright lights of the studio, Jandová’s life has undergone a quiet shift, prompting a reevaluation of her priorities and a change in career path. The meteorologist, who spent two decades analyzing weather patterns, recently left her position at the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, citing the challenges of shift work and a growing passion for creating quizzes and board games. This transition, coupled with a noticeable change in her physical appearance, has sparked public interest in the life of the woman who expertly navigates trivia challenges on national television.
Jandová’s rise to public recognition began with her appearance on Na lovu, a show where contestants attempt to accumulate a cash prize while evading the pursuit of a team of “hunters” – skilled quiz experts like Jandová. She quickly gained a reputation for her impressive knowledge and strategic gameplay. “Often people ask me what the filming is like and what Ondra Sokol is like,” Jandová said in a recent interview. “At first, a lot of people asked if we knew the questions in advance. I consider after all these years, everyone has realized that we really don’t know them beforehand. Now we’ll be filming for five years, so it should be clear that You can’t know the questions in advance.” She added with a laugh, that early on, contestants would inquire if they received thematic hints, to which she playfully responded with broad categories like geography, literature, or biology, acknowledging the sheer breadth of potential questions.
A Five-Year Run and Unexpected Success
Reflecting on her five years with Na lovu, Jandová expressed surprise at the show’s enduring popularity. “I didn’t think it would be such a success,” she admitted. “You never know how long a show like this will last. But when I saw the British version of the format, I thought it might appeal to Czechs. They’ve always loved quizzes and competitions; they’re playful.” She credits the show’s success to the combination of challenging trivia and the comedic presence of co-host Ondra Sokol. The format, originally British, has clearly resonated with Czech audiences, providing a platform for Jandová’s quick wit and extensive knowledge.
From Meteorology to Quizzes: A Career Shift
For twenty years and several months, Jandová dedicated her professional life to meteorology. However, the demands of shift work ultimately led to her departure. “The main problem was the shift work – it was increasingly difficult to combine it with other activities,” she explained. Beyond her television commitments, Jandová has cultivated a passion for creating quizzes, questions, and books, with a particular focus on board games. “I finally realized there was just too much on my plate,” she said. This decision reflects a growing desire to dedicate more time to her creative pursuits, allowing her to explore her interests outside of the traditional scientific realm.
Climate Change and Public Perception
While Jandová is no longer actively working as a meteorologist, she remains informed about climate change. She clarified her role, stating, “I am not a climatologist, but a meteorologist. Climatologists devote themselves to this issue systematically from morning to night, so I don’t have as much to say about it. It’s a slightly different field.” However, she firmly stated her belief in the reality of climate change, acknowledging that “the last few years have been among the warmest in the history of measurements.” This acknowledgement, while acknowledging the distinction between her field and climatology, underscores the scientific consensus on the changing climate.
A Healthier Lifestyle and a Modern Focus
Jandová’s recent physical transformation has likewise drawn public attention. She attributes her weight loss to leaving her previous job. “It was a sedentary job, often twelve-hour shifts, minimal movement, and you naturally snacked on things,” she explained. “Now I move much more. I also tried to adjust my diet. I’ve always liked wafers, chocolates, or sandwiches. I told myself I could at least partially allow myself those treats, and it works. It’s not that I don’t eat chocolate at all, but not in the same quantities as before, especially those filled wafers. I think that played a sizeable role.” This shift in lifestyle, driven by a change in work environment, has contributed to a renewed sense of well-being.
Balancing Work and Family Life
The demanding schedule of her previous job also impacted Jandová’s family life. “Before, I used to work every other weekend, which bothered me the most and made it difficult to combine with family activities,” she said. Now, she prioritizes spending time with her two daughters, aged eleven and fifteen. “Of course, I always made time for them, but I often finished work I did from home at night. Now I can manage it during the day.” This newfound flexibility allows Jandová to be more present in her daughters’ lives, fostering stronger family connections.
Family Fans of “Na lovu”
Jandová’s daughters are also fans of the show, particularly the celebrity specials and the spin-off Superlov. “They don’t usually watch during the broadcast time, but when they have the opportunity, they watch. They like Superlov and have definitely seen all the celebrity specials,” she said. While they may not watch every episode featuring their mother, they enjoy the show and occasionally tease her about her mistakes. “I actually prefer it when they watch the colleagues rather than me,” she added with a smile.
As Jandová embarks on this new chapter, focusing on her creative endeavors and enjoying a better work-life balance, she continues to captivate audiences with her intelligence and wit. Her journey from meteorologist to “Kvízová dáma” demonstrates a willingness to embrace new challenges and pursue passions beyond the confines of a traditional career path. The next step for Jandová involves continuing to develop engaging quiz content and board games, bringing her love of knowledge and playful competition to a wider audience.
