Carrefour Under Fire as Investigation Reveals Cruel Conditions at Rabbit Farm Supplier

An investigation by animal welfare group L214 has exposed what it calls “unacceptable living conditions” at a rabbit farm supplying meat to French supermarket chain Carrefour, sparking protests and a growing petition demanding an end to intensive farming practices. Activists are targeting Carrefour, despite the brand’s stated commitment to cage-free rabbit breeding, alleging a stark contrast between policy and reality.
The findings, released this week, prompted L214 activists to distribute hundreds of leaflets to shoppers outside the Carrefour de la Toison d’Or store in Dijon, France, as part of a nationwide campaign spanning 35 cities.
Shocking Conditions Uncovered
The L214 investigation documented rabbits confined to cages measuring just 20 cm by 15 cm, reportedly lacking adequate care and subjected to frequent inseminations – approximately every month and a half. These conditions directly contradict Carrefour’s public pledge to source rabbit meat from farms adhering to cage-free breeding standards.
“The discrepancy between Carrefour’s promises and the reality on the ground is deeply concerning,” stated a senior official with L214. “This investigation highlights the urgent need for greater transparency and accountability within the food industry.”
Beyond Rabbits: A Broader Critique of Intensive Farming
L214’s campaign extends beyond the rabbit sector, aiming to challenge the broader model of intensive animal agriculture. The organization estimates that around 10 million chickens, pigs, and calves are killed each month in France due to intensive farming practices.
This push for change appears to be resonating with the public. According to L214, over 80% of the French population opposes intensive breeding, and a petition calling for an end to the practice has already garnered more than 80,000 signatures. Passersby and customers demonstrated strong support for the cause, readily signing the petition.
Growing Consumer Awareness and Demand for Change
The situation underscores a growing trend of consumer awareness regarding animal welfare and the ethical implications of food production. The investigation’s findings are likely to intensify scrutiny of Carrefour’s supply chain and potentially influence consumer purchasing decisions.

The L214 investigation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in ensuring humane treatment of animals within the complex global food system, and the increasing pressure on corporations to deliver on their commitments to ethical sourcing.
