Fernando Ramirez, 29, the suspect in a shocking car attack that injured 36 people in East Hollywood early Saturday, has a criminal past that includes a felony battery conviction.

Ramirez, of San Clemente, California, was reportedly attacked by bystanders following the incident. Paramedics discovered he had been shot, and police are actively searching for the shooter, described as a man with a goatee wearing a blue Dodgers jacket.

What was the motive for the car attack in Los Angeles? Authorities have not yet determined why Ramirez allegedly drove his Nissan Versa into the crowd of people, mostly women, who were waiting outside the Vermont Hollywood event venue around 2 a.m. Saturday. The vehicle also struck a food vending cart and a valet stand.

Los Angeles police Captain Ben Fernandes revealed Sunday that Ramirez was convicted in 2020 for assaulting a man in June 2019 outside a grocery store. He was on parole at the time of the recent crash, though it remains unclear if this parole stemmed from the 2019 attack or another case.
