MAV GLOBAL FAIRS REPORT

The joy over the 40% female participation achieved in the 43rd edition of ARCOmadrid is clouded by the unequal participation in the rest of the fairs: JustMad and Hybrid continue to commit to parity; while Urvanity (31.6%) and ArtMadrid (28.7%) stubbornly persevere in sexist discrimination. But, given that in ArtMadrid there are works by some deceased artists, with works from periods in which they were the majority in the market, the worst fair from a gender perspective is Urvanity, specialized in what they call “new contemporary art.” only with young artists. Let us remember, once again, that they are more than 70% of the graduates in Fine Arts and artistic studies in recent decades, in Spain and in the countries around us.

On the other hand, as in ARCOmadrid, this year the data of Spanish artists in the other fairs is also positive, which have a much lower foreign participation than in ARCOmadrid. Although, again, in Urvanity we find the excellent percentage of 10.3%, even worse than in ARCOmadrid, and much lower compared to ArtMadrid (18.1) and JustMad (28.1%). For the better, Hybrid stands out with the equal percentage of 41.2%.

Finally, these results are independent of gender in the direction of galleries, which, in any case, is found in equal ranges.
