“Lack of equal discussion.” The Fraternity announced a national train strike

In the midst of the conflict between the government of Javier Miley and different unions for the closure of paritarias, the main union of train workers, The Fraternity announced a total strike of its national lines for Wednesday, February 21 and will last 24 hours.

The statement was signed by the general secretary of the union, Omar Maturano, after a meeting this Friday in which they have “decided to exercise the right to strike (Art.14 Bis of the CN), on February 21, 2024, from 00:00 to 24 hours”, and they argue that it is in response “to the lack of equal discussion and a salary proposal adequate to the rampant inflation that deteriorates salaries-which have a nutritional nature- of the staff of train driving, causing irreparable damage.”

In addition, they referred to the right to strike “within the explicit recognition of Argentine constitutional law since as General Perón said ‘within the law, everything; outside the law, nothing.’”

Maturano assured that the national government owes a 55% increase and that since December there has been no salary negotiation. “When we went to the first meeting, they were honest that there was no money. The cost of living increased, they killed our pockets and we went to claim what is due to us. We have been running after inflation for years. “We want what they owe us, nothing more,” said the general secretary of La Fraternidad in dialogue with TV Chronicle.

“We need a 24-hour general strike and a 12-hour mobilization,” launched Maturano.

Tension over wages

In addition to the conflict with the trains, the Government raised the tension due to the failure of the meeting for the Minimum, Living and Mobile Wage and for the teaching parity and the discussion for the salaries is in full swing. “Isn’t this an issue that has to be addressed by workers with their employers?”, the libertarian asked when referring to the increase that is being defined on the general salary floor. “I don’t think a politician can determine a price by hand. It doesn’t even occur to me. Am I going to issue a decree setting a price?“, he exclaimed, when after Thursday’s failed meeting the President was expected to determine the figure through the Official Gazette.

Along the same lines, he maintained that the educational issue is a problem of the provinces, at a time of high friction with the governors. “We have a question, we don’t like setting minimum prices”slipped in Radio Rivadavia and thus he made it clear that he will not call the teaching unions to establish a guideline that will later impact the negotiations with local leaders.
