A hard-fought victory propels the Tennessee Lady Volunteers deeper into the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Tournament, securing their place in the semifinals against top-seeded Kentucky.
The fourth-seeded Tennessee volleyball team demonstrated resilience and firepower, earning a four-set win over fifth-seeded Florida in Savannah, Georgia (25-27, 27-25, 25-22, 25-19). The Lady Vols (20-6, 10-5 SEC) showcased a balanced attack and stifling defense to overcome a determined Gators squad (15-11, 9-6 SEC).
Lady Vols Showcase Offensive Prowess
Tennessee finished the match with an impressive 57 kills on .262 hitting, efficiently distributing the offense with 54 assists. Hayden Kubik, a senior outside hitter, led the charge with 15 kills and a season-high sixth double-double, adding 11 digs and three blocks. Starr Williams continued her strong form, delivering 14 kills – her fourth double-digit performance in the last five matches. Chelsea Sutton proved a force at the net, contributing 10 kills on a remarkable .318 hitting percentage, alongside a team-leading five blocks.
“We really focused on executing our game plan and trusting each other,” a team spokesperson stated. “It was a total team effort tonight.”
Defensive Dominance Seals the Victory
The Big Orange defense proved pivotal, recording 10 blocks and 64 digs, effectively limiting Florida to a .179 hitting percentage. Gülce Güçtekin anchored the back row with a team-high 19 digs, tying her season best with eight assists. Caroline Kerr orchestrated the offense with 43 assists and added 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Mackenzie Plante provided an all-around contribution with 14 digs and eight kills.
A Match of Momentum Swings
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, featuring 14 ties and six lead changes. Despite briefly taking a three-point advantage, Tennessee ultimately dropped the set 25-27. Sutton ignited the offense with six kills, while Williams added four. Kerr facilitated the attack with nine assists, and Güçtekin led the defensive effort with seven digs.
The second frame mirrored the first in its competitiveness, with 11 ties and five lead changes. Florida initially built a six-point lead, but Tennessee mounted a spirited comeback, ultimately securing the set 27-25 and leveling the match. Plante stepped up with five kills, and Kubik anchored the defense with five digs.
Tennessee faced another early deficit in the third set, trailing 18-14. However, a decisive 5-0 run swung the momentum in their favor, leading to a 25-22 victory. Williams was unstoppable, recording seven kills on an exceptional .700 hitting percentage. Kerr expertly distributed the ball, assisting on 15 of the team’s 17 kills, contributing to a .342 hitting percentage for the set.
The fourth set saw the Lady Vols take complete control, never trailing en route to a 25-19 win. Kubik closed out the match strong with six kills, while Kerr added 10 assists. The Tennessee defense stifled the Gators, holding them to a mere .103 hitting percentage.

The Lady Vols will continue their SEC Tournament journey, facing one-seeded Kentucky in the semifinals on Monday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on SEC Network.
