Sailing Therapy Project Enhances Well-being for Adults with Disabilities on Lake Maggiore

A groundbreaking initiative is harnessing the power of sailing to improve the psychophysical health of adults with disabilities in Besozzo, Italy. Beginning October 16, 2025, participants from the CDD – Day center for disabled people of Besozzo – will experience the therapeutic benefits of being on the water, fostering both socialization and enhanced proprioception, the body’s ability to sense its position and movement in space.
The project, spearheaded by the Renato Piatti Onlus Foundation in collaboration with Asd Wind Sail and Music, represents an innovative approach to rehabilitation. It combines the restorative qualities of nature with the challenges and rewards of sailing therapy, offering a unique pathway to well-being.
A Holistic Approach to Rehabilitation
The program isn’t simply about learning to sail; it’s about leveraging the environment to promote healing. Participants, carefully selected for their ability to engage safely and actively, are accompanied by specialized operators with lifeguard certification on board two dedicated boats during excursions on Lake Maggiore. According to a foundation representative, “The natural environment, with the wind, the sun and the water, becomes an integral part of the rehabilitation process, promoting relaxation and sensory stimulation.”
This holistic approach addresses multiple facets of well-being. Beyond the physical benefits of maneuvering a boat, the program aims to reduce agitation and tension through the calming influence of the water and open air. The initiative also prioritizes socialization, providing a supportive environment for participants to connect with one another and build community.
Early Results Show Promise
Initial feedback from the program has been overwhelmingly positive. Participants have demonstrated enthusiasm and, notably, have not exhibited any increased physical ailments during or after the sailing experiences. A senior official stated that the boating experience has produced “states of relaxation,” with positive effects extending beyond the duration of the activity itself.
The association making the boats available to the project was motivated by a desire to share their expertise after witnessing the broad benefits sailing can offer, extending beyond recreational enthusiasts to individuals facing significant life challenges. The project is also linked to the broader “Aut Out” project, which promotes inclusion initiatives.
The Future of Therapeutic Sailing
This pilot program on Lake Maggiore could serve as a model for similar initiatives worldwide. The success of this project underscores the potential of integrating outdoor activities and sports into rehabilitation programs for individuals with disabilities. Further research and data collection will be crucial to fully understand the long-term impacts of sailing therapy and to refine best practices for implementation.
