Norris Claims Mexico City Grand Prix, Seizes Formula 1 Championship Lead

A dominant performance by Lando Norris at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday has propelled him to the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings. The McLaren driver secured a commanding victory, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, and now holds a narrow one-point advantage over teammate Oscar Piastri.

Norris led every lap of the race, but the path to victory wasn’t without its challenges. The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents a unique test for drivers, boasting the longest run from the starting line to the first turn – exceeding 800 meters – on the entire F1 calendar.

Chaotic Start to a Commanding Race

Despite a strong launch, the opening lap descended into chaos as drivers jostled for position at Turn 1. The corner quickly became four-wide, with Norris defending the inside line against the Ferrari pairing of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, and a rapidly approaching Max Verstappen.

Both Verstappen and Leclerc briefly ran off the racing line, momentarily allowing Leclerc to take the lead. However, demonstrating sportsmanship and a keen awareness of potential penalties, Leclerc immediately yielded the position back to Norris. “A pretty straightforward race for me, which is just what I was after,” Norris remarked to James Hinchcliffe trackside.

Piastri’s Recovery Drive

While Norris controlled the race from the front, his McLaren teammate, Piastri, faced a more difficult afternoon. Starting seventh, Piastri dropped several positions in the early stages but mounted a determined recovery drive. He skillfully navigated past the Mercedes drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, ultimately securing a fifth-place finish. This result, while not a podium, represents a strong performance given the challenging circumstances.

Late Drama and a Virtual Safety Car

The closing laps of the Mexico City Grand Prix were filled with tension as Verstappen attempted to close the gap to Leclerc. The Red Bull driver briefly entered DRS range on the penultimate lap, but a late Virtual Safety Car – deployed due to Carlos Sainz Jr.’s car stopping on track – effectively neutralized the chase. Despite a frantic restart with just a few corners remaining, Leclerc successfully defended his second-place position from a relentless Verstappen. Oliver Bearman, driving for Haas, achieved the best result of his F1 career, finishing fourth.

“Yeah, beautiful weekend. Well done, everyone. Incredible result,” Norris exclaimed after crossing the finish line. “Wonderful car, thanks for the hard work. Keep it up, we need to keep it up.”

Championship Implications

The victory moves Norris to 357 points in the Drivers’ Championship, just one point ahead of Piastri (356). Verstappen remains within striking distance in third place with 321 points. The incredibly tight battle at the top of the standings sets the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the season.

  • 1st: Lando Norris
