Latvia Narrows Competition for Competition Council Chairman to Four Finalists

The selection committee tasked with finding a new leader for Latvia’s Competition Council (KP) has advanced four candidates to the second round of a rigorous, three-stage evaluation process. The initial phase focused on verifying candidates’ qualifications against mandatory requirements, signaling a commitment to a highly qualified appointment.

The search for a new Chairman comes at a pivotal time for the Latvian economy, as ensuring fair competition is seen as crucial for fostering growth and attracting investment. The process, according to sources close to the committee, aims to identify a leader capable of navigating an increasingly complex regulatory landscape.

Second-Round Focus: Vision and Motivation

The second round of the competition will delve deeper into the candidates’ suitability for the role. Applicants will be asked to articulate their motivations for seeking the position, respond to probing questions from the selection committee, and, crucially, present their strategic vision for bolstering commercial competition in Latvia.

“This stage is about understanding not just if a candidate is qualified, but how they intend to shape the future of competition policy in Latvia,” a senior official stated.

Assessing Leadership in the Final Stage

The final round will concentrate on evaluating the candidates’ management competencies. Key areas of assessment will include:

  • Strategic Vision: The ability to anticipate future challenges and opportunities.
  • Results Orientation: A demonstrated track record of achieving tangible outcomes.
  • Decision-Making & Accountability: The capacity to make sound judgments and take ownership of results.
  • Change Management: Skill in navigating organizational transitions.
  • Team Leadership: The ability to inspire and motivate a high-performing team.

Recommendation Process and Potential Roadblocks

While the selection committee will recommend the highest-scoring candidate(s) to the Minister of Economy, the process isn’t automatic. The Minister is not obligated to forward the committee’s recommendation to the Cabinet of Ministers for final approval, introducing a potential point of political consideration.

The successful candidate will earn a pre-tax monthly salary of 4,883 euros. Beyond the financial compensation, the position offers a significant opportunity to shape the Latvian economic landscape, with the Chairman representing Latvia within the European Competition Authority Network and the International Competition Authority Network.

Evaluation Committee Composition

The evaluation committee is chaired by Raivis Kronbergs, Director of the State Chancellery, and includes:

  • Raivis Bremšmits, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Economics, Acting State Secretary
  • Edijs Šaicāns
  • Andra Feldmane, Advisor to the Latvian Union of Local Governments in the field of entrepreneurship
  • Jānis Lielpēteris, Member of the Board of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Providing independent oversight is Kaspars Gorkšs, Director General of the Latvian Employers’ Confederation.

The ongoing competition underscores Latvia’s commitment to maintaining a robust and competitive marketplace, and the final selection will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the nation’s economic trajectory.
