A severe weather warning is in effect across most of Latvia as the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVGMC) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall, beginning Wednesday. Residents are urged to prepare for potential disruptions as significant precipitation is expected to impact the western and central regions of the country, with the west facing the most intense downpours.
The approaching storm system poses a considerable risk of localized flooding, particularly in the regions of Kurzeme and Zemgale. Authorities warn that heavy rains could overwhelm drainage systems, leading to waterlogged roads and potentially washing away culverts. Rising river levels are also a major concern.
Rainfall and Wind Forecast
The heaviest rainfall is anticipated to concentrate over the western and central parts of Latvia. According to the LVGMC, some areas may experience particularly strong rainfall. Accompanying the precipitation will be gusts of wind, adding to the hazardous conditions.
Temperature Variations and Additional Hazards
While the majority of Latvia will see temperatures ranging from +18 C to +23 C, eastern regions are expected to experience warmer conditions, reaching +24 C to +28 C. Beyond the heavy rain and wind, the forecast also includes the possibility of thunderstorms and hail on Wednesday afternoon.
Prolonged Rainfall in Kurzeme and Zemgale
The threat of heavy rainfall is not limited to Wednesday. The LVGMC forecasts that precipitation will continue in Kurzeme and parts of Zemgale on Thursday, extending the period of potential disruption.
The combination of sustained rainfall and already saturated ground creates a heightened risk of localized flooding in these areas. Residents are advised to monitor local conditions closely and heed any warnings issued by emergency services. The potential for road closures and travel delays remains significant.
