Uni Girona’s point guard, Laura Peña, has been called up to compete with Spain in the FIBA window of the next few days. The national coach, Miguel Méndez, has decided to complete the list of players called up with Peña after the last-minute withdrawal of Cristina Ouviña.
The base of Valencia Basketball has passed some medical tests in the last few hours which have confirmed that he is suffering from an injury in the hamstring muscles of his right leg after he retired with physical problems in the match against Euskotren.
Peña is the under-20 European champion with Spain in Hungary in 2018, just with Miguel Méndez as coach, and the breakout player of the Women’s League in the 2021-2022 season. The Vilassar base had already been called on two occasions: the first was in May 2022 and the second just a year ago. In this way, Peña will be the only representative of Spar Girona on the list, apart from Laia Palau in the coaching staff. The maresmenca has so far played a total of 10 games for Uni Girona this season, contributing 5.3 points per game in domestic competition and 6 in the Eurocup.
The Spanish national team has been concentrating since Saturday to prepare the first two qualifying matches for Eurobasket 2025. Since yesterday, the team has been training at the Golden Triangle in Madrid, where it has begun to prepare Thursday’s matches, in Croatia at 6:00 p.m.; and on Sunday, in Tenerife against Austria at 12:00 (Canary time).
