Laurent Simons Joins Bar-Ilan University Research Labs

Laurent Simons, a 16-year-old Belgian prodigy with a doctorate in quantum physics, is preparing to join research laboratories at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Driven by ambitions to extend human life, the young researcher combines physics with medical science following a fast-track academic career across Europe.

Laurent Simons Prepares for Bar-Ilan University Research

A teenage scientific prodigy who earned a doctorate in quantum physics at age 15 is preparing to join research laboratories at Bar-Ilan University in Israel.

Laurent Simons, now 16, has built an extraordinary academic record that spans institutions in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. His planned move to Israel comes as he pursues a second doctorate, focusing his attention from theoretical physics toward medical science and the biology of aging.

The young researcher’s upcoming arrival shows Israel’s ability to attract international scientific talent, despite political tensions and calls for academic boycotts. Simons recently visited the residence of Israel’s ambassador to Belgium, David Saranga.

Sharing details of their meeting on social media, Saranga posted photographs with the young scientist, whom he referred to as With the Einstein of Belgium.

David Saranga said that contrary to the impression that has been created, Israel has many friends in Belgium. They come from all parts of society, different religions, backgrounds and age groups, according to Vinnews.

One of them is Laurent Simons, and these are voices that are also important to recognize and make heard. Saranga explained that neither Simons nor his family members have any connection to Judaism. He described the researcher’s interest in Israel as entirely voluntary and rooted in scientific curiosity.

The ambassador noted that the visit combined a genuine love for Israel and admiration for scientific research. Under a photo posted to his accounts, Simons himself indicated that the Middle Eastern nation would be his next and final destination.

Simons Expands Research to Artificial Intelligence

Simons completed primary school around age six and finished high school at just eight years old. He subsequently enrolled in electrical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands before moving to the University of Antwerp in 2019 to study physics.

On November 17, 2025, at the age of 15, he successfully defended his thesis at the University of Antwerp.

His work focused on particle interactions with their environment in superfluids and supersolides. Following his doctorate in quantum physics, Simons expanded his academic scope toward biomedical sciences and artificial intelligence.

In Munich, he joined the laboratory of Ali Ertürk—an entity working alongside Helmholtz Munich and Ludwig Maximilian University—to prepare for a second doctorate in medical science. His research interests in Munich centered on whole-body imaging technologies and the intersection of physics and medicine.

Among his recent milestones, Simons was listed as a coauthor of a scientific study published on May 20, 2026, in the prestigious journal Nature.

That collective work utilized artificial intelligence tools named MouseMapper to map nerves and immune cells in mice in three dimensions. The research helped investigators examine how obesity alters organs and tissues.

Simons Pursues Goals to Extend Human Life

Simons has made no secret of his long-term goals. His ultimate ambition is to push the boundaries of medical research to extend human life.

He aims to achieve this by combining physics, biology, and medicine, while also contributing to the development of artificial organs.

Laurent Simons explained via Paris Match that his objective involved by extension, creating ‘super humans.’ By that I mean humans with superior capabilities.

Simons has an underlying fascination with the passage of time. He added, One of the reasons I am interested in this is because I believe the person who controls time will be the most powerful person in the world.

His family and he examined opportunities in Israel to advance these investigations. They built upon a prior visit to the country in August 2025.
